I grew up in Western PA and did the Youghiogheny half a dozen times. Great fun. Later, I did the New in West Virginia. It was a bigger river and was, if I remember correctly, a IV-V, as compared to the Yough's III-IV, but it wasn't as much fun as the Yough. Which is why I never did the Colorado.

The New is kinda hard-core (from what I hear) given all the undercuts. Class IV river with one class V (Iron Ring iirc) but mushroom-shaped sandstone all around.

I grew up watching for my Dad and big brother paddle the ocoee, nantahala, new, gauley, chattooga, french broad and so on from the river bank. Then the family packed up and moved to Oregon when I was just about old enough to start paddling. So I grew up paddling in Oregon, Washington and Idaho and missed out on all of the famous (and warmer) rivers. They're on the 'someday' list though...

Most of the hard-core paddlers I know won't have anything to do with a rubber boat.

Woah that is a nice trip. Ok maybe years down the road if I manage to get married and all that stuff- it would be a good anniversary trip haha.
