I?m leaving Saturday to go white water rafting in West Virginia. This will be my second time going, and had a great time when I went last year. I was just wondering who has gone before, where you went, did you like it, and do you have a good stories to tell.

I went once on a 3 in NC. The guide was off his rocker, he kept trying to flip the raft, which was funny at first, but over some of the larger rapids was a little unnerving, then on a big one it kicked me off the back into this whirlpool type thing that held me just under the surface (I had a jacket on) for about 1.5 mins untill luckily another boat came by and as it went over the rapids kinda blocked the water for a minute then hit me and dragged me out (underneath it) I'd like to do it again with some one who isn't crazy, because it was fun, minus the whole almost drowning part.

I've done the Upper Hudson and Moose in New York, the Kennebec, Penobscott and Dead in Maine and the Cheat, New and Gauley rivers in West Virginia after starting on the Lehigh in Pennsylvania. Have always had a blast, we get big groups and rent condos in the area of the river. We'll usually do it over 3 or 4 days like taking off from work on a Friday before a long weekend. Travel Friday, party Friday night. Raft Saturday, party Saturday night, raft Sunday, party Sunday night and travel back on Monday.

Last fall I went white water in West Virginia. Please tell me you are doing the Gauley River!

It was fantastic, something around 10 class 5+ rapids, and me in a small 4+guide boat. Such an incredibly fun time. I have a DVD that the tour company made of my group (falling in, crashing, getting torn away from rocks by the current, all that fun stuff), so if I can figure out how to take a screenshot of my DVD program (printscreen wasn't working) I'll post some. It was fantastic. One of the best experiences of my life.

Anyone know how to go from paused DVD to image? I try printsceen, but I just get a transparency where the image should be . . . Some of these sequences need to be shared!

I did the Lower New a couple of months ago and had a blast--mostly class 4's and 5's, but no one got launched from the boat like I'd hoped. Next year I'm definitely hitting the Gauley.

The Gauley is nuts. I did the marathon run, it was quite a trip.

I suggest you do a Double Upper, though, it has more rapids and no long slow parts. And a nice 15 foot drop right at the end of it . . . heh.

Though some of the lower rapids are pretty incredible, too. We had one guy evacuated from the lower section, I forget which rapid. THe boat flipped for no apparent reason, just before a class 5+. Anyway, so most of the kids swam it, and this one guy was getting pulled back into the boat. The procedure we were taught is you haul the guy in by his life vest . . . anyway, so the guy in the boat pulls on the vest, so the vest rides up on the guy who is swimming, just in time for a rock to nail him in his now unprotected gut. They were worried about internal bleeding, so they trucked him out to a hospital. Another guy broke his toe at some point . . .

I would love to do it again.

No I'm doing the Lower New, which is better then the upper. The Gauley is only open for two months in the fall. The water levels are controled by a dam, and dam day I guess is a huge event held every year. Two of my friends are working there, so i might go back to the Gauley

I was talking to one of my friends and he said that someone drowned this year, but he also said that the person didn't even try and swim, or grab the throw bags.
