last I heard they were both worthless foods. is brown rice even any better if you're trying to not die of pre-diab?

Brown rice has way more fiber, ~10% fewer calories, lower glycemic index, and more of some nutrients. On the downside, brown rice has a bit more fat and less folate. So, in general, brown rice is better than white rice. But, why not just go all the way to barley if nutrition was your primary concern?

For me, short grain brown rice has the best flavor/texture. But, when the choice is between brown and white, the white rice being done 30 minutes sooner does sometimes convince me to use it.

I go parboiled. Nutritious, but similar in taste and texture to white rice.

Brown rice is better because it has a flavor, white rice is just sticky starch.

While at dinner one night eating white rice in part my wife said something about trying to lose weight (doesn't need to). My mother-in-law said, "well then you should stay away from white" then looked at me. Was pretty funny.

I guess white rice is worse for you than brown rice huh.

brown rice may be healthier, but it tastes like cardboard.

Are you sure you're not eating some weird wild grain variety? That's the only sort of brown rice I've had that could be compared to cardboard.

Brown rice tastes better than white rice if cooked correctly. Only way it tastes like cardboard is because you failed at cooking it correctly. You either didn't cook it long enough or you didn't put enough water, or maybe even both of those things.

There's not much rice I've had that has a lot of flavor on its own... that's up to you. User error

I only really do brown rice when it's available but when I was in Tokyo, there was something about their rice that just tasted delicious. This was plain white rice. Idk what they do to it.

I'm not a cook and dunno how they actually do it, but I hear that making it with some beef fat or broth it will add a lot of flavor. Chicken stock would have a similar effect with a lighter taste.

Right, that's what I do when I'm making rice. I just made some the other day in a pressure cooker with chicken stock, onions, carrots and celery. Turned out really well. It was just enough flavor to be a good side dish on its own without being overly salty like many "fried rice" dishes I've had in the past.

I like the taste and texture of brown rice much more than white. Plus it has more fiber, and thus a lower glycemic index, as mentioned above. The cooking time is neither here nor there for me. I usually just cook up about a cup and a half and stick it in the fridge. Microwaved in seconds, it's good for up to about a week.

All in all, though, any rice is nearly worthless nutritionally. If you're trying to limit your caloric intake while maximizing your nutrition, there isn't a whole lot of reason to eat it.

Brown rice is less nuclear fallout proof than white rice. Brown rice also has fairly significant anti-nutrients as well so its a wash at best with white rice potentially being better for you.
Also brown rice takes forever to cook...
