White-Label 2tb Hard Drives

I've bought 'grey market' (i.e. white-label) PC parts before and was able to cross-reference them to their OEM or retail counterparts.

I was scanning pricewatch today looking for some 2tb deals (building a media server for the house) and came across a "white label" 2tb hard drive from goharddrive.com for $114. Seems like a great price but, as many of us know, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

I can't find any cross-reference out there for the model # they have or the specs. It appears the drives could be Seagates or Samsungs...but some of the specs point towards a Hitachi or even EADS Western Digital drive.

Is there anyone out there who's bought these "white label" drives before? I'm going to be getting 8 in total and the price difference between these and ones from newegg would be around $160 in total...about a 10% difference.

What is white label? Looking at the site the OP listed and $105 for a 750GB sounds damn good...I mean, isnt it like only a few companies actually make these? So white label or not its still a WD or Seagate, no?

White label is when the product is re-branded by a sell (not another manufacturer)... eg: Apple/Dell/HP

I originally confused it to a NO label product, no label is when you get an OEM piece of hardware that doesn't have a brand name, someone obviously produced it, but it is unbranded.
Unlike re-branding (where 20 companies just put their sticker on the same piece of hardware), no label means that the product is so cheap and crappy that they are ashamed to claim credit for it as it will hurt their brad image. The most common no label hardware piece I see would be ram, sold without a manufacturer name (and you can and will often get different manufacturers all sold under the same listing) now that I think about it, I wouldn't buy ANYTHING with no label, not even ram (which is the safest bet for no label).

As far as white label goes though, its basically unknown which manufacturer it is and it will change manufacturers for the same "part number"

Right, but the 750GB drives HAVE to be made by Western Digital as they are the only ones that make them right now...why would WD NOT want to claim one of their own drives? What you said just doesnt make any sense to me what so ever.

And considering that WD only makes one model of the 750GB drive its not like it is going to be "cheap" than any of the other 750GB drives they produce unless the intentionally made them cheaper like worse motors or something...

I confused no label with white label... white label is when someone like HP or Dell or whatever puts their branding on it..
So they would be WD drives sold as "apple HDD" or "dell HDD"

Also, he was asking about 2TB drives not 750GB...

Well, with the 750GB 2.5' drive they have on there it is a WD...thats the only case. White label or not, still a WD.

Ah, 2.5 inch drives, yes that is true. You can be certain who really made it regardless of whether its branded as "apple" or "hp" or whatever. Just don't expect a warranty from WD for those drives; but those drives are a safe bet.

2TB drive though, it could be anyone's drive. So its just a matter of who makes 2TB drives, and how cheap it is...

White label parts could be anything. Companies have different quality level screenings & premium drives such as enterprise HDDs undergo more rigorous testing and quality screening. A white label could be a drive that was returned for some reason. These could include an RMA on a new drive but where the returned drive was actually okay or drives pulled out of external enclosures which were returned because the enclosure electronics failed (eg, a failed WD Passport ext HDD).
