Around here if it goes in a handgun it gets called a clip. If it goes into a rifle it is a magazine. Have heard it like that for as long as I can remember.

A Magazine has internal moving parts, and may or may not be detachable. Basically, if it has a spring loaded follower (nearly all current designs), then it is a Magazine and *not* a Clip.

A Clip just holds the bullets together - (the old M1 Garands use Clips) - and are invariably detachable, since they're used to load an internal magazine.


And yes, a lot of people use the term interchangably.

Yes, I would have to agree that people wanting to ban something for the sole reason of it is a "big black scary thing" is getting rather old.

For most people that own them it is simply a hobby. Kinda like people who put big ass tires and lift kits on their trucks or people who spend tons of money making their car go faster or big ass sound systems or bouncing cars etc... A Ferrari could be one hellofa gettaway car for a bankrobber to outrun the cops in but criminals tend not to use them. It is the same reason criminals don't use AR-15s in crimes, they are just too damned expensive.

When you hear someone referring to their computer case as their hard drive what do you generally assume that persons knowledge of computer hardware is? Would you assume that person had a reasonable and informed understanding of computer hardware?

The very simple point that many people have tried to get you to understand is that when discussing a topic like this your view is taken much more seriously if you use proper terminology. You are taken even less seriously when you make statements like "I know I am wrong and I will continue to be wrong because a bunch of other people are wrong too".

Also even if robbers could afford a Ferrari, it'd make a terrible get away car. The idea is not to outrun the cops. That is pretty impossible. It's to blend in and to be hard to identify.

It's one of my criteria for judging the knowledge of a gun owner I don't know or just met. Anyone who starts off calling magazines clips gets put at the noob table until proven otherwise. So if Alky had a valid point that would change this it would have been nice to hear it. He hasn't delivered, the method stands.

Point Taken: /agreed on the Willful Ignorance part - Peeve of mine, as well. Though I do have extra incentive (in the form of a hostile State Gov't and Judiciary) to become educated; a form of "encouragement" most other US Citizens probably do not need to deal with.


Having said that: The Non-Shooting/Owning populace are a part of the discussion, whether "We" like it or not. And they often use the terms interchangeably. Again - Whether "We" like it or not. While we want to acknowledge it with a simple correction, it's silly not to let it drop in the face of larger issues.

Woefully ill-equipped? That depends on where you go. My University police force has access to some extremely nice tricked out Bushmaster AR-15s riding in patrol cars. And the crime in my area is minimal.

And I'm all for taking guns out of the hands of criminals. In fact I'm for gun and ammo licensing in theory. The issue is I know a lot of gun control advocates who wouldn't care if the US had zero gun crime and zero illegal guns, they'd still see guns as a pox on society and would strive to eliminate them. These people are the real danger, and they're usually the ones proposing and promoting gun control legislation. Look at the the Attorney General of New Jersey who denied permits to a part-time Sheriff and a kidnap victim, among other people, just because they didn't demonstrate a "demonstrable need". In fact she openly stated that law abiding citizens carrying guns were a threat to the public. And she's a freaking attorney general.

That's why I get all on edge when gun control legislation comes along. People who would deny the innocent their right to self defense out of some delusional public "service" need to be contained, and the public educated. The gun control advocates come out swinging whenever there's a crisis like Arizona, why can't the other side?

What happened, you used to actually sound like you had a brain rattling around in your head, not so much today, you all doped up?

The reason that people get annoyed with people that don't know, don't use, refuse to learn the correct terminology is that those same people are often the ones wanting to take firearms away. I don't think that if you want to curtail someone else's rights that you should at least have a clue what you are talking about. It's the sheer ignorance that makes people crazy. It is ignorance that fuels the anti-gun movement, so too bad, you want to cry like a little girl that had someone take away their candy because responsible, law-abiding citizens can own guns, than get used to being called a moron when you can't prove continually that you don't even know what you are talking about.
