White House to announce 4 resignations today By Rex Nutting

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The White House will announce four resignations from President Bush's Cabinet on Monday, said spokesman Scott McClellan. News reports have Secretary of State Colin Powell, Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman and Education Secretary Rodney Paige leaving after four years on the job. "On any of these, [Bush] will move as quickly as possible to name their replacements," McClellan said. No replacements are expected to be announced on Monday

In the old Soviet Union thos would have been called a purge and none of those leaving would be around to write a book about their experiences in this administration.

WTF is going on? I know Ashcroft had health problems and such, but now I'm actually beginning to entertain the notion of rats fleeing a sinking ship. I'm sure these people know more than we do, but is that the reasoning behind the resignations? Makes me a bit nervous.. 🙁

Bush's Regime *IS* a sinking ship.

Colin Powell is smart for jumping; reports thought he may have stayed on longer to gain some credibility for helping the Israeli/Palestine situation, over his fumbled handling of the Iraqi ("I can put my finger right on those weapons (WMDs)" fiasco.

But I'm glad to see Colin is jumping sooner, rather than later, and being tainted less.

Typically the Pres asks them to resign...

Agriculture-Venerman (leaving)
Commerce-Evans (leaving)
Defense-Rumsfeld
Education-Paige (leaving)
Energy-Abraham (leaving)
HHS-Thompson
Homeland Security-Ridge
HUD-Jackson
Interior-Norton
Justice-Ashcroft/Gonzales (already done)
Labor-Chao
State-Powell (leaving)
Transportation-Mineta
Treasury-Snow
Vet Affairs-Principi (rumored to be on the way out)

Cabinet Rank Members

Cheney
EPA-Leavitt
OMB-Bolten
COS-Card (staying)
US Trade Rep-Zoellick
Drug Control Policy-Walters

That's 6 of the 15 (not counting Cabinet Rank members), rumor is 50% of the cabinet will be replaced.

Anybody have numbers of how many left past administrations?
Yeah, this could very well be normal, as I've never really followed the cabinet resignations of other second-term administrations.

There's also the idea that since the nation seem to be pretty evenly split over the Administration and it's past performance, Bush is doing a bit of house-cleaning in order to try someting a bit different this term. I'm sure some will put the "getting rid of dissenters" spin on it (might be true), but it could also be a legitimate "let's make things better" policy change. It probably depends on what you want to see. Any bets on M. Moore's take on it? 😀

Edit: From 1996: 4 Clinton Cabinet Members To Resign

Also, this funny.

I'm no longer that worried; this seems perfectly normal. I'm sure Limbaugh and Co. harped on those resignations, same as some will harp on Bush's.

Well, if one more resigns, it'll match Clinton's 7. 😉

Sinking what?
Really, Clinton had 7? Who were they, I can't remember the names of more than a couple of people.😱

sinking what?????

lighten up libs, we have not started the next four years yet, and the ship is sinking? hahahahahahahaha

poor libs and hilliary

Now the question is: Is Bush gonna fill the holes with more conservative radicals, or is he going to try to make it a bit more moderate? I have to admit I hope and will have a touch of respect for him if he goes a bit more moderate.
