As we step ever closer to a dictatorship...

We now have brazen political retribution of critics.

What's next?

President Trump plans to revoke the security clearances of a handful of former officials who have been critical of his rhetoric and actions toward Russia, the White House announced Monday, in a move that immediately prompted claims of political retaliation.

most should have already been revoked/terminated when the person left their position. I am unsure what security level any high official such as a brennan or Rice would be able to keep after leaving.

Regardless of party, once out of the position requiring a clearance, the clearance should be ended. It was for me anyway when I retired.

Came here to ask this. Why would any of them still have clearances after leaving their positions?

Former high ranking officials often keep their clearances in case their successor wants to consult with them on something.

Regardless this is just Trump trying to distract from all the other bullshit he’s caught up in and should be ignored.

I'm thinking Trump wants to revoke all security clearances the former officials may have.

Vindictive chickenshit gonna chickenshit.

Bonus! Libertopia's favorite son kisses the ring- the sphincter ring, of course.

I wonder how many right wing talking heads have their old security clearances...

As it should be, especially in the cases of Comey and McCabe. It's a courtesy given to retired or resigned officials........ a courtesy.
Welcome to the resistance from the other side.

Comey and McCabe already don’t have security clearances. Lol.

Isn’t it embarrassing that they were too stupid to check if these clearances even existed before threatening to revoke them?

I was thinking that any clearances former officials may still have would have something to do with any consulting they may be involved in.

It's all the whispering of sweet nothings into the ear of the base. Facts don't matter. He sold birtherism, didn't he?

That’s true. It could very well be that they have such total contempt for his followers that they don’t care if it’s true because they know clowns like Taj will swallow anything.

I think we all have to agree that most of Trump's supporters would have no problem with him declaring a coup. Whatever it takes to keep Trump in power should be fine with them. After all, they really don't mind him being a pathological liar, an adulterer, a cheat, a welsher and of all things an ardent admirer of Putin, who at present represents the greatest threat to our democracy, so there's not much of a leap of faith from that to think that he and his supporters would do it if they could get away with it.

If a crisis occurs, can you really not see the value in consulting these experts who have knowledge and experience few others do?

Not that trump has any interest in knowledge or experience.

You know this for a fact?

Tell it to Reuters, it's where i got the information.

Heh. Your own link says McCabe has no security clearance. Duh!

A spokeswoman for McCabe, Melissa Schwartz, wrote on Twitter that his security clearance was deactivated when he was terminated, according to what they were told was FBI policy.

“You would think the White House would check with the FBI before trying to throw shiny objects to the press corps,” Schwartz said.

The same rules apply to Comey, I suspect.

This does sound like trump retaliating for former government employees exercising their right too free speech.

However I don't know why anyone would want to keep a clearance once they no longer require it. Especially a clearance as high level as for e.g. the director of the CIA would have. It puts the clearance holder under an enormous amount of scrutiny.

Would the former holder still be under scrutiny for long while after they retire? After all they could still leak classified information.

Nope. Trump wants to remove clearances for people because they were critical of Trump and no other reason. It is a straight up dictator move to use political power to silence critics and flies in the face of the first amendment.

I have no problem with an agency making a call to revoke based on someone's risk outside of political motivations. This is a far cry from a President directing removal for motive of silencing critics.
