At least, it seems this way. I don't want to sully the forums by linking a trailer to White House Down, but anybody who has seen a trailer to Olympus Has Fallen (which came out this year) knows that the White House is attacked and the president is taken hostage. In this movie the white house is attacked and, well, if the president isn't taken hostage the rest of the movie seems the same.

IMDB OHF:
Disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack; using his inside knowledge, Banning works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.

IMDB WHD:
While on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a Capitol policeman springs into action to save his child and protect the president from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.

If you go to IMDB they even have nearly the same posters. A white guy and a black guy (two white in OHF, though) with the white house burning behind.

The timing of the releases is key. Olympus has Fallen got dumped off in March against weak competition while WHD got held back for blockbuster season. That alone shows that the studios have confidence in the ability of WHD to win a large audience while they had no faith in OHF.

Another possible Netflix event for me. I won't waste my money on this.

I still find the title to be the most baffling part.

'White House down, we gotta White House down...'

Mike Durant should have a cameo.

Studios also had confidence in that recent Smith X2 movie, which has been reviled universally by critics and fallen far short of expectations by Sony :)

wait, this is real? based on OP's description, this sounds to me like one of those D-rated knockoffs from that trash studio that releases about 3 or 4 of these similar-titled flicks every year, straight to video.

yeah, OHF was more serious

WHD seems more like Rush Hour... a buddy comedy
i'm surprised they didnt cast Brendan Fraser (The Mummy I, II, III). he would be perfect for this type of movie

Yep, this is no Jack the Giant Killer. It is an actual movie with real decent actors.

Oh man I went to imdb and saw Roland Emmerich is directing this?! NOW I gotta watch it!
Im surprised though, his movies are always about supernatural catastrophes, so I hope there will be "something else" here as well (inb4alieninvasion)

Will be nice comparing the two for sure

Anonymous, not a catastrophe movie at all, was directed by Roland Emmerich which was pretty damn good movie imo. I would give an 8 out of 10.

Maybe Roland is melowing out in his older age...

I saw an extended trailer thing tonight. Movie looks so bad. At some point Channing Tatum is in some office and a person is going over his file. Of course, he has a silver star and also--and I couldn't believe they still use this line--a problem with authority. Truly, that is in the actual movie.

Oh, and there is a part where the president (jamie foxx) is shooting a rocket launcher out of the side of a car.

This stuff always comes in pairs. Dante's Peak and Volcano, The Illusionist and The Prestige, and now this

Sometimes the blockbusters/blockbuster attempts tend to come in pairs.

Armageddon and Deep Impact
Dante's Peak and Volcano

Those two pairs stick out in my mind, if only because I've seen at least one if not both of each pair sometime in the past year on TV. :p
Both shared the same year release date.

I'm pretty sure that kind of thing happens in Hollywood often. Some writing team or production team, or studio, gets the snub on one film, tweaks the idea to seem unique, and takes that to a new production group.

I, uh... missed that post with the Twin Films wiki article.
Damn, should read the thread I guess. :\

Most of these pairings had a clear good and bad version of the premise, and though one was clearly better I think both Entrapment and the Thomas Crown Affair are fantastic movies.

There were quite a few where both movies with relatively successful.

Armageddon/Deep Impact
The Prestige/The Illustionist

Not that either of these were good, but they were equal:
No Strings Attached/Friends with Benefits.

I knew this happened, but I never realized this happened this freaking often. Kinda funny.

I'm tempted to cut this terrible movie a little more slack. It's becoming obvious from the TV spots that it's not taking itself very seriously. A comparison to 'Rush Hour' does not seem far off.
