I found this interesting and most likely a more accurate appraisal of what Obama meant for Bolden to say!!!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100712/pl_nm/us_obama_nasa

Mon Jul 12, 5:50 pm ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Monday that NASA administrator Charles Bolden was wrong to say that reaching out to the Muslim world was a top priority of the U.S. space agency.

Bolden raised eyebrows in the space community and outrage among conservative pundits by telling Al-Jazeera television recently President Barack Obama had instructed him to work for better outreach with the Muslim world.

He said Obama told him one of his top priorities was to "find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math and engineering."

Improving relations with the Muslim world was a top foreign policy priority for Obama on taking office last year and he delivered a major speech on the topic in Cairo in June 2009.

The White House last week sought to clarify Bolden's comment, saying Obama wanted NASA to engage with the world's best scientists and engineers from countries like Russia and Japan, Israel and many Muslim-majority countries.

That failed to end the controversy.

Gibbs, at his daily news briefing, was asked why Bolden had made the comment.

"It's an excellent question, and I don't think -- that was not his task, and that's not the task of NASA," Gibbs said.

Many in the U.S. space community, such as moon astronaut Neil Armstrong, are disgruntled by Obama's proposals to bolster support for private space companies and abandon an over-budget NASA moon program.

In Obama's defense he probably didn't think he had to add "But for goodness' sake don't tell anybody I told you this, 'cause the taxpayers think you're still doing that useless science crap that never redistributed a dime to a welfare recipient."

This typical Obama backpedaling damage control isn't going to work any better than the previous ones. In fact, it makes them look like outright liars.

Why? Reaching out and achieving better relations with the muslim world isn't necessarily some pie in the sky 'citizen of the world' bs. It serves our rational self-interest in both the short and long term.

How the fuck is reaching out to muslim nations to make them feel good a goal of NASA?

I don't know if you're familiar with the space program, but it's all about science. What organization do you think is better suited to getting Muslims to realize that science is good?

It seems to work on Christians. A lot of you hate and mistrust science, but you think NASA is "freakin awesome".

more then likely, it's a across the board departmental goal set forth by the obama and nasa was the first to expose it.

Exactly. We need to utilize NASA's resources in pursuing space exploration, not making muslims feel good.

Also, good to hear Gibbs said that NASA chief "misspoke" with his comments about muslim nations.

Do you really not get the difference between "making Muslims feel good" as you say and "making Muslims feel good about their historical contributions to science"??

One of those things is a stupid right wing talking point, and the other makes a LOT of sense in the face of anti-science right wing fundamentalist extremism.

If I try to explain the historic scientific contributions of Christians to get you to see the value of science and understand that you don't have to be a fundamentalist moron, is that the same as "making Christians feel good"?

No, I dont see the difference. NASA should not be out on some feel-good adventure in the Middle East. Space exploration, thats where resources need to be directed. I'm glad the White House agrees with me.

Millions of monkeys can be trained to hit the bars of their cages in unison at the utterance of words like Muslim or world citizen.

If we want to make Muslims feel good about scientific achievement, then we need to let them completely conquer us and take over our culture. Because that is how Muslims got credit for scientific advancement in the middle ages - they conquered progressive cultures and claimed their knowledge as their own. I guess that's the plan!

I'm not seeing the difference either.

And "No", NASA isn't the proper organization to "mak[e] Muslims feel good about their historical contributions to science". NASA is about getting into space. We have all kinds of science type organizations in government, my google-foo says there are at least 14. Why the heck pick NASA?

IMO, the very last thing we need to be doing is introducing the Muslim world to any additional rocket science. I don't think I like what I expect they would end up doing with it. It'd be like introducing an arsonist to a blow torch.

It's been said that their contributions were to the field of medicine, so why pursue that aveneue. The 'space thing' makes no sense from any angle.

And we already have a government agency devoted to 'relations' with other countries etc. Let the State Dept play this 'PC game" if it must be played.

I'll point out that our universities have many Muslim students, some even in science type programs. so I see no need to remind the Muslims of their science past. In fact the whole thing seems more like like something aimed at us, trying to inculcate in the US person a respect for the history of the Muslim world.

NASA's requested 2010 budget is $18.69 billion dollars.
http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2009/may/HQ_09-102_FY2010Budget.html

If you think one of the highest priorities of this budget should be helping Muslim nations feel good about their historic contributions to science, math and engineering, then I doubt there is literally anything I can be doing that you would find of value.

I am curious though as to what phrase liberals think could be misunderstood as "One of your highest priorities running NASA is helping Muslim nations feel good about their historic contributions to science, math and engineering."

Bolden was probably exaggerating because he was talking to Al Jazeera...
