I'm gonna go to target in a bit to get a white elephant gift for the company party.

Anyone see anything awesome or funny there lately? I'm going for half joke half useful.

I have a friend that's on Oasis Of The Seas and that would be a perfect gift. ;)

you're missing the point of a white elephant gift

That's why I always bring something that's not lame...like a 12 pack of decent beer or a bottle of wine and watch people fight over that instead of some ugly tree ornament that will probably get thrown away.

One of those big 48 packs of toilet paper. This gift is win for a number of reasons:

- it's huge, so it will be the first thing people pick
- everyone thinks large quantities of toilet paper are hilarious. Not sure why, it's a natural law for some reason.
- Everyone can use it

Just get a bottle of liquor as close to the cap as possible. That's what I always do and my gift usually gets stolen the max number of times.

so what is the point?

I think a true white elephant puts emphasis of trying to *get rid of* of a gift you don't want. And the act of forcing it on somebody else is the drama.

However it's been modified by many while keeping the name and emphasis is put on stealing something you want. That's why I always bring something that is actually desired. The idea of novelty/gag gifts that are just going to get thrown away sort of annoys me.

It's more fun watching the case of beer get stolen 10 times and have people fight over it than watch some ugly cookie jar with a "Christmas Rooster" on it get passed around.

My best was a large white porcelain rooster. I picked it up on the clearance endcap at target. The guy who got it was walking around asking everyone if they had seen his cock. :)

It may be more fun, but it's not a white elephant gift. What you're referring to is simply called a "gift".
