So I have had my D90 for a little over a week, I'm loving it. I knew it would be leaps and bounds ahead of a P&S, but never realized how far ahead... lol

I can't stop taking pictures... i'm still learning a ton, but I feel as if I am getting better and better everyday.

I am shooting pretty much solely in Apeture Mode (where I chose Aperture and the camera selects the shutter speed) and mostly with my 35mm lense with a little of the 18-105 and 70-300 sprinkled in (i've been doing indoor shots thus far). Also shooting in RAW mode.

Now to my question, white balance. I have it set to Auto (along with iso auto). I have been playing around with Lightroom 2.5 and it's auto whitebalance setting... boy does it change the picture... here is an example (i know i know, not the best picture... i'm still learning!!!):

A: http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/2596/45751887.jpg

B: http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/928/90475981.jpg

A is what my camera took, B is white lightroom "auto" whitebalance did. No doubt in my mind do I think A looks better, but I feel like B is more releastic colors though not exact... on a scale, say A is 1 and B is 10, it is about a 7. If anyone has any tips please enlighten me. It seems like something is off, but can't quite put my finger on it

Kind of hard to say without knowing what color your dog is, but B does look really cold.

I would skip the auto white balance and just move the slider yourself until you find the right balance.

You can manually play with white balance by using standards for different light sources. It all relates to color temperature., IOW, daylight sunny, daylight cloudy, incandescent, flourescent, flash, etc., all have different temps. Some cameras let you set specific temps in Kelvin. This article has a table that is easy to use.
