I can't say I'm surprised. Out of all my high school and college friends (affluent white people for the most part) only a handful, less than 10%, had kids by the time we were 30.

I had a vasectomy last week and have no kids. I just don't really like kids enough to sacrifice my own time\enjoyment for them, and I do like having nice stuff. It's tough to have both (both for cost and breakage reasons.)

I guess America belongs to the immigrants... I'm not recycling anymore. :D

RIP white people.

Thanks for your automobiles, computers, medicines, airplanes, democracy...

It is sort of funny that Caucasians built the most advanced civilizations in the world, went to the moon, cured terrible diseases... only to become so comfortable and rich that we can't bear the inconvenience of procreating. That seems to make us an evolutionary failure.

Interestingly enough, Greeks were once not considered to be 'white' in America.

The Wright brothers had a part German mother (also once not considered 'white').

One of the people considered to invent the modern computer (depending on how you define it) was Konrad Zuse, also a German and therefore once considered nonwhite.

The inventor of the modern automobile was also German.

It's so interesting when stupid people thank 'white people' for things when the definition has been so malleable as to once exclude nearly everyone who invented the things you're thanking them for.

Do they say what they consider a white person to be?

Such as being white and having a kid with someone who is half white and say half hispanic is not considered a white child?

It seems the most logical way to look at it would be if they were considered white when they made their contribution to society. In every example you listed, they were. Germans were widely accepted as part of "old stock" American whites by the mid 19th century.

And it's a good thing too; they probably wouldn't have come up with any of those things if they hadn't been admitted to the club. :D

IIRC the United States still has a legal definition for what qualifies as "white."

Dude, not only were German's considered white, but they were part of the Nordic sub-race, the greatest of all the white races

That's a really good question.

Since when does nationality have anything to do with race/color?

Eh... back in the 18th and early 19th century the English descended Americans didn't consider Irish people, Germans, French or basically anyone but Anglo-Saxons to be white. Those definitions rapidly changed by the mid-19th century to be more common sense oriented, based on whether someone actually appeared to be "white."

I was unaware that Greeks were considered 'white' in the US in approximately 500BC, but that's neither here nor there. (I get the feeling like the US let the ancient Greeks into the white club while keeping the living ones out)

I would say that the entire point of my post was how completely stupid it is to thank 'white' people for things when the definition of 'white' is so malleable.

Greeks ok, but when were Germans not considered white? They're the very definition of white.

Germans not white?

How do you come up with this crap?

It's called a basic knowledge of history. German immigrants in the 1700's were considered nonwhite by lots of people. Here's a good quote about them from Ben Franklin:

Why should Pennsylvania, founded by the English, become a Colony of Aliens, who will shortly be so numerous as to Germanize us instead of our Anglifying them, and will never adopt our Language or Customs, any more than they can acquire our Complexion.

Which leads me to add one Remark: That the Number of purely white People in the World is proportionably very small. All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth.

It doesn't.

But how dare someone say that white people are responsible for society. It is better to deflect by saying Germans aren't white.

To the person that stated that Germans aren't white:
HELLO, Aryan race ring a bell? Blonde hair, blue eyes. How many other races had blonde hair/blue eyes and tried to take over the world in the 1930's/1940's? I guess the Germans were black or Asian and I missed that in my history class.

I read that as Germanize is to make German (the nation) and Anglify is to make British.

So where does that say anything to do with race? I see it as nationality. I see the word complexion in there. Merriam-Webster's definition has nothing to do with race either.

Franklin was talking about nationalities, not races.
