Whistling & crashing

Hi,

My PC has been giving off an annoying whistling noise for a few months already. Not quite sure where it's coming from, but it only happens when I plug the 32-or-however-many-pin connector to my mobo, so I'm guessing the whistling isn't coming from the PU but from the mobo.

Anyhow, I was just reinstalling a new Gentoo linux on my system today, what with 2006.1 being released, and the fact I still hadn't upgraded to xorg-x11 7. I don't know for certain if the load was to blame (what with all the compiling going on and all), but it's been crashing regularly, as if it were overheating. However temperatures havn't been over 40°C for both CPU and MB, more like 37 38 max., and 32-33°C at idle, which is relativly normal.

So basicaly, I need help finding out what's going on here. I don't want to buy a new PU if I'm not sure that's the problem, and likewise a new mobo. Also, I've had a gander at all the condensers I could see, and they all seem in good nick.

Any ideas ?

One other thing: when it crashes it just stops (instantaneously), i.e. it doesn't reboot. This leads me to believe its à hardware (BIOS?) reboot not software (Windows, Linux).

Please help! :]
