In case nobody's noticed, I think they put the wrong caption for the DOTD........

Also, that Radar detector is no more useful than a good pair of glasses. Please guys, get a top of the line escort or V1, the money you save on these cheesy things is not worth it.

i disagree, the money that can be saved can go for a while when you think of the increase in insurance and safety to know that an ambulance or firetruck is behind you

Totally agree on the V1 detector. Others pale in comparison. I have one and it has paid for itself many times over in saved tickets, points, added insurance etc...

I have V1 too... I've tryed probably 10 different models starting with cheap ones (the one that is offered on buy.com) and to more "advanced" expensive models. V1 is THE BEST radar that I've ever seen. It does look like it is 10 years old because of it's size and shape, but it offers the best protection out there. I know because it saved my butt quite a few times. Don't waist your money on other crap, V1 will cost you the same as paying for a cheap low end radar plus first speeding ticket that you'll get while using it.

Disclaimer: I don't work for Mike Valentine and in no way benefit from this post :)

Drive safely.

what brand is V1? what is the full model name so I can find the review:
I got myself a Precision Navigation RX5000 with Digital compass off igo.com clearance sale for $49.99
It sells for $179.99 at amazon here
What do you think of this radar detector?

It depends on how serious you are about radar detection. I have a V1 in my turbo AWD ground based cruise missile and an Escort in the minivan. Each works well for that particular application :D

The V1 is a no-brainer, but the Escort is no slouch either.

With radar detectors you truly do get what you pay for. If you buy a cheaper version all you get is a detector that works half the time and the other half it's so annoying you have to unplug it.

I have an Escort Passport 8500 which has saved my butt so many times. My friend has the V1 (Valentine One) and although it is an awesome radar detector, it doesn't come with many features. I like the Escort better because you can choose to turn off all but one or two radar bands. Since I am in California and police here use Ka-band, I can turn off all but Ka, thereby reducing nearly all false alarms (like the X-band coming from KFC). In Washington State, police use only K-band, so I turn off all but K.

As far as range, I've tested my Escort with one of those radar-trailer-readerboards that say "Your speed is:", and I can pick it up well over 1.5 miles away. My friend's V1 picks it up at 1.1 miles.

My suggestion to those who are interested in a radar detector is to save up some money and get the money. You're not going to be satisfied with anything less.

Edit:
One nice feature that the V1 has over the Escort is lighted arrows that tell the direction of the radar. It saves a few seconds of looking in the mirrors and allows you to keep your eyes on the road.

You can buy the Escort Passport 8500 at high end car audio/electronics stores (I think I paid around $300 when all said and done), or you can get it online atEscort Radar. The V1 is only available online from Valentine One and it runs for $399.

Well after reading all of your options. etc, I decided to give the escort passport a test drive for 30 days and see what happens. This sounds like a win win situation. They will even pay for return shipping and shipping the way here if I decide to return!

Dougie,

I dissagree.

QVC Sold me one a few months ago. Residing in VA buddy.

She said im not really supposed to but my son goes to UVA and i just bought him one. THere are nice peoples everywhere if you take the time to look.

Use it all the time. Great as a safety device. I dont speed ...but when i accidently ride the pedal, its a great warning system to make you alert.

criminal: where did you buy the escort at and for how much. Or is it sold exclusively on their website?

I think we should just all drive well below the posted speed limit at all times. Espescially in the left lane of Freeways and Interstates.
Oh yeah, and with the left blinker on for around 80 miles.

;)

I had a Uniden RD9-XL(?) years ago and it served me well, but you guys are right - the Valentine is expensive but top shelf!

I am sure most of us do drive around the speed limit. The highway here is 60, and the average speed is 70. It was pretty funny last week, there was a cop going about 63-64, everyone stayed in back of him, then here comes this car, going like 65, as soon as the car past the cop. boom. there goes the lights. thats pretty lame if you ask me.

moral of the story. Don't pass cops.

The valentine one is most likely the BEST (and most likey the most expensive) radar detector made.
They sell for $399 but if you frequently get tickets this detector will pay for itself real quick.
Here's the url for the V1:

use your head and you won't need a detector!
like don't speed under bridges, or though turns where visibility is limited.
and DEFINATELY speed through long open straightaways :)
