I've got a 20 inch monitor with a Sony trinitron tube, its about 6-8 years old. It still has a nice looking picture, the problem is it makes a whining sound, I thought it was a case fan bearings going out, thats what it sounds like. It use to only do it once in awhile, now its all the time. Before I could change the resolution and that would make it stop, now that dos'nt help. The picture does still look good. Anybody no whats going on with it. I don't want it to blow up in my face. Thanks for the replies in advance!

Sounds like it could be a low refresh fate, try a higher refresh, I can hear mine when the refresh dips below 70hz

gentobu has it right. The next step is the pungent smell of burnt electrical insulation.

I changed the refresh rate from optimal to 60hz, that took care of the noise. I guess it did'nt like the optimal what ever that hz was. Thanks for the replies.

My 6 year old monitor used to make such noise.. then it began to lose red colour.. so I gave it a good bang whenever it lose colour, and it came back..
After abouta month.. it went dead.. :( so I sent it to be fixed, now it's ok.
I don't know what was wrong..

I have a SONY CPD-220VS Trinitron and I found that if the volume is too high the monitor speakers make a staticy-whining noise (although it could be the monitor itself) and turning down the volume gets rid of it.

it's either the resolution or the refresh rate...or both. my viewsonic does that when you put it at 1280. obviously it wasn't made to handle that kind of resolution even at 60Hz.

i have a sony 15" trinitrom (100GS) and it had the same problem a few moths ago. it was more of an annoying, buzzing noise (like a mosquito on roids). the sound lasted for a day or two and hasn't returned. i didn't do anything special, or even try to fix it.

<< sounds like it could be a bad flyback transformer >>

If it's a high pitch whine...that's exactly the deal.

Same goes for TVs w/picture tubes.

For that age, I wouldn't be suprised at all either.

A high pitched whine is not necessarily an indication that the monitor is dying. There are a number of things that can cause a whiny high-pitched sound. It is almost always due to vibration of a component in the horizontal circuits, most often the flyback transformer or horizontal output transformer. This is why a good wack to the side sometimes temporarily fixes the problem. It will not get better over time only worse. It will not blow up in your face. I do not recommend you attempt to fix this yourself, unless you are trained and very comfortable working with extremely high voltages.

A service technician should be able to find the offending component and either replace it, remount it, or add some material which will stop the vibration. As noted above, It may also stop if you simply run the monitor at a different resolution or refresh rate. Try taking it down to your local TV repair shop, they may be able to help.

Good Luck
