whining noise from xbox 360

i fired up my 360 today to start another mass effect playthrough- long story short, i lost all my hdd data and wanted a save present for when the sequel comes out. first time i've played it in awhile except for occasional rock band practice, which i usually do with headphones, so i don't know how long this has been going on.

mass effect is installed to the hard drive, so there's no disc drive noise. it's also not the power brick. but i'm getting this high pitched, pulsating whine while i'm playing that is driving me insane. it seems to be equally loud no matter which side of the xbox i put my ear to. is there any common problem that causes this? i've googled and havn't been able to come up with anything.

i'll crack the piece of shit open and fix it myself if possible, but i'm curious if anyone else has experienced this.

edit: on a cold startup with no game in progress, it seems to be gone. bad fan, maybe?

the real kick in the ass is that this was a brand new replacement that MS sent when my other one died. it has maybe 20-30 hours on it, tops. what an abortion of a game console.

and edit2: noise came back while just idling at the dashboard, though it seems quieter.
 
if it is a high pitch whine and the dvd drive isn't spinning, it is likely a bad fan making the noise.
 
in what manner? not much way to dust the thing without taking it apart, which i guess i'll go ahead and do to see if there's a bad fan.
 
Your post is making my scratch my head. You can't figure out how you would use a vacuum to suck dust through air vents?

It's probably a long shot, but it's a lot easier than taking the system apart and it won't void your warranty.
 
i mean that a vacuum isn't going to achieve enough suction to pull dust through all the little vent holes.

i'm really not worried about the warranty. i think it's about out of the 3 year RROD warranty. if it breaks again i'll fix it myself. or smash it with a hammer for being a worthless piece of excrement.
 
If its not a drive, the only other thing it could be is a fan. I've had some in computers that made noises that would come and go. Should be a cheap fix.
