While driving to work...

I had my old T23 laptop operating with a 802.11b reference cardbus card plugged in. I had Netstumbler running as I drove through a small part of my neighborhood, on to a state highway (Durham Freeway) and to Research Triangle Park. Of the 62 wifi MAC signals my system sniffed out, 32 of them were open.

why buy access when your neighbors want to give it to you for free?

If you notice on the list there are two names, American Tobacco and godurhambulls. These two are side by side and represent the Durham Bulls AAA baseball team/stadium. So bring your laptop and WAS (work @ stadium)!

:D

Now I need to hook up a GPS to my new T41 laptop so that I can get a GEO lock on each wifi signal.

No one reads the manual, one of the first things linksys says is to change the name of your router...

I remember when I first did some netstumbling, it was october and wireless was fairly new. I picked up a quite a few sites, but when I did another run after christmas they were everywhere.

My wireless card picks up two wireless networks other than mine while in my house. I'm trying to figure out which neighbors it is so I can let them know.

Mine is named "BitchesBakinBiscuits" and I have MAC address filtering turned on.

And to think all this stuff is just surfing around through the air 24/7, all around you and through you... I bet our testicles have MAC addresses by now.

tsunami is the default for Cisco
default is the Netgear default
belkin54g is Belkin's
Apple Network 80f4d1 is Apple's

Hmmm. I bet the Apple folks think that viruses and bad things only happen to Wintel users.

Gives a whole new meaning to IP addresses, doesn't it?

No point, no one around here is smart enough to leach off my wireless. Plus it barely picks up as it is. I doubt anyone except for my direct neighbors would pick up the signal. I check the logs though, no one's been accessing my router.

my wireless security:

1. Disable SSID broadcast, set SSID to random caps and lowercase
2. Enable WPA security on WAP, using RADIUS authentication against freeRadius
3. strong WPA secret (random, caps and lowercase key)
4. wireless network is on a separate subnet from my wired network and physically separate using ASL
5. no DHCP in wireless zone
6. MAC address filtering on Wireless
7. PPTP VPN to the wired network should I ever need access to filesharing

I can sleep at night...can you?

Speaking of sleeping and things you could do while downloading, benchmark your throughput and post it. ;)

(Bitchin' security setup, assuming you meant WPA.)

I just use wep because my roommate's laptop doesn't do WPA or WPA-PSK. I figure any password will stop most leachers.
