While NC Dems attended 9/11 memorial, GOP secretly voted to override budget veto

I guess the GOP keeps finding new ways to politicize 9/11...here’s a novel new approach from Raleigh, NC today:

I guess they were still butthurt over losing their gerrymandered maps ahead of elections next year (though there are hints they will just defy the court order?)

NC Republicans’ shameless theft of democracy

The verdict is now plain. North Carolina’s Republican legislative leaders — not actually leaders, but connivers — are beyond shame.

In a stunning display of contempt for democracy, House Speaker Tim Moore, a Cleveland County Republican, called a surprise vote to overturn Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of the state budget just after a session opened at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Democratic lawmakers and the media had been told by Republican leaders that there would be no vote in the morning.

Most Democrats were absent. Enough Republicans, aware of the secret plan, were there. When Rep. Jason Saine, a Lincolnton Republican, made the motion to reconsider the state budget, the handful of Democrats on hand objected strenuously.

With only 64 of the House’s 120 members present, the vote to override passed 55-9.

When your 4 year old promises that if you leave the fucking cookie jar open, they won't grab cookies, you put the lid on the cookie jar and then place it out of reach of the 4 year old.

Any Democratic politician in NC that assumed that the Republican party was going to have any sort of integrity is essentially unfit for office.

Classic self-goal by the NC Democratic party. In case any of them were wondering, no, the Republican party doesn't give one fuck about anything other than power.

Wake. Up.

This bullshit move is right up there with scott walker trying to hamstring the the new Democratic governor of Wisconsin
last Nov, before he even took office.

Cheating, lying, worthless, no-good, mothereffers. The GOP is full of slime and they need to get rid of it.

All dirty politics.
Comes down to which side is more willing to go the lowest and get the dirtiest.
Why would democrats trust the republicans in the first place? Did no one notice that when all the democrats left the chamber to attend a memorial that none of the republicans followed them? Would that not be a huge clue that something was up?
Come-on democrats everywhere.... you need to be more aware and never take anything for granted.
And... NEVER trust a republican.
While a republican is shaking your hand, the other hand is in your pocket taking your wallet.

They won.
Maybe no fair and square as it were but... a win is a win.

As I said in another thread. The game has changed and Republicans are playing with different rules. The sooner we realize that the better.

North Carolina Republicans did that too.

They gerrymandered the districts so even when they lose they win, then when they lost the governorship because you can’t gerrymander that they tried to take away the governor’s powers. When the state Supreme Court ruled against their power grabs they tried to tamper with that too. They want nothing less than permanent minority rule for themselves.

As David Frum said, if conservatives find they can’t enact their agenda democratically they will not abandon conservatism, they will abandon democracy.

Advocating violence is bad...but...at this point a couple congress critters swinging from trees seems like about the only recourse a citizen has to put any fear into their politicians. I'm waiting for the authoritarian takeover to reach the point the masses take to heart the last couple paragraphs from the Mussolini Wikipedia.

NC is no longer represented.

They do seem very committed to making sure that North Carolina's voters don't get a say in how North Carolina is governed. This is what the GOP as a whole is about too. They know they can't persuade a majority of voters so their goal is to keep them from voting.

Is she really angry or is she just posturing?

Probably really angry. The Dems were skipping family vacations, medical appointments (including for cancer), coming in sick etc in case republicans tried to sneak a vote in for the last two months.

Apparently they thought that even NC republicans, who are basically a criminal organization at this point, wouldn't stoop so low as to exploit a commemoration of our country being attacked to score some political points.

And FYI, the budget they're trying to sneak through cuts medical care and teacher pay for people in NC in exchange for corporate tax cuts.

Good. As long as more than 5% of the population is still willing to vote GOP we all deserve much worse.

Yup. The previous Republican governor campaigned in 2016 on the fact that he increased teacher pay [insignificantly]. He lost, so the GOP legislature got vindictive and argued teachers should not be part of the proposed increase in public salaries. Teachers are nothing more than political opponents to them and fair game for fuckery.

The Medicaid shit is just your typical GOP “Obamacare bad!” move...Cooper promised Medicaid Expansion in NC and the GOP is basically trying to make it meaningless by changing the way providers get paid to ensure fewer services are available to newly eligible Medicaid recipients.

NC is a lot like Kentucky. Beautiful state. Ugly people. Wife was looking at a job in Charlotte. It's a cool town, but fuck man...I'd be leaving one bat shit retarded state of politicians for arguably a worse one.

Embarrassing. If the republican party had a shred of integrity they'd disavow this behavior and call for the removal of everyone who voted yes from office.

It’s been incredibly depressing to see republicans now explicitly using the powers of government to attack their domestic political enemies. I suspect this will continue to get worse as time goes on.

This is another reason why I think independent of Trump the US is heading for something bad. One of the two parties simply no longer accepts the system and wants to run the US like a banana republic. Sooner or later they will get their wish.
