I'm sitting here in a computer lab and these people across from me are working on some project. So this guy goes on his e-mail to download something and I hear "oh shit." Then some more "oh shits" and a few "oh fvcks", followed by a "what's the RIAA?" :D

Edit: Ah it's the guys roomate. However, he did get caught for sharing Shania Twain - Any Man of Mine. :D:D

If they're in a computer lab how can the RIAA possibly get this guy's e-mail address. Dozens of people probably use that same workstation every day. I can understand them getting the IP but how his e-mail address?

Sounds like a prank to me.

No, they were caught for sharing off of their dorm room computers. So the RIAA e-mailed the school with the IP and they traced that to the user since it was in a dorm.

Doh, that sucks.

Did they just tell him to desist, or are they actually seeking legal action?

From what I heard him say, it was inbetween. Part of it was a notification that his roomate was caught, but then at the end it said the possibility of lawsuit was left open.

No, the kid sounded completely clueless with computers. I'd guess he was in civil or mechanical.

Hey! I'm a civil engineer and I take offense to that.
