I have a brand new cendyne 16/48x which is reportedly a rebadged Samsung.
I bought 3 and am using 1 in a PC -- and the one I opened was indeed a samsung.

PM me if you're interested in buying and tell me what you'd pay (+ shipping if you're not near tacoma wa)

The upc on the box is: 683728000851
with the letters: CDICD00085 above the barcode
It's a plain internal one, with a beige front

the serial# starts with: K05463CTB_____ (5 digits after the B)

Any old Samsung drive will not work. It must be a 616t. And the firmware needs to be re-flashed. And some soldering needs to be done also. EDIT: Also. A modified (not made specifically for the xbox) Samsung drive WILL NOT read original (legal copy) discs. EDIT: While the drive is in you're computer and another DVD drive is also installed.

Best solution would be to replace the drive with an original drive, you can buy them here-->http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=22 . You can use any one of the ones that say Xbox DVD drive.

EDIT: While you are at it. You'd may as well throw in an Executer chip and a larger HDD. It's surprisingly easy, especially with the Xapter solderless solution.

The 616t and 616q *should* work. I believe the one in the box is a SD-616Q, since the one I opened is. FWIW, the one I opened is SD-616 model: Q, November 2002, firmware rev. F401, H/W: A.

According to all the tutorials i've read, it must be a 616t or a 616t, with a 616f PCB, since they both share the same electronics.

i already have a chip and bigger HD in there. i guess i must have fubar the dvd drive when i tried to adjust the POT.

another question: when i boot with the chip off to the MS dash, i get an error that my xbox needs servicing. will a dead dvd drive trigger this error? i never got this error message before the dvd failed.

What is the error code in the upper left of the screen? (if at all)

the modded samsung 616t can be a direct replacement of the dvd drive right? not a piggybacked drive in slave mode or something like that?

Yes, it's a direct replacement, but you do have to modify your case slightly. Nothing to big. Trim one of the plastic posts and one or two other small things like that. If you're going the 616T route I suggest you buy a modified one instead of modifying it yourself. I've modified a couple and while it's not real hard, it's not a 5 minute job either. Either that or just buy a stock Samsung. Personally, that's what I would do, even though it's a probably a bit more $$.
