Which XBox Package to Buy

So my fiance wanted to get me a present for my birthday and the only thing I could think of that I've been wanting is an XBox 360. My friend has one and he's been bugging me to get one so we can play online with XBox Live.
I went out to Newegg to look at the different packages they've got and the Arcade package is the cheapest. I'm trying to keep the price down so she doesn't go broke getting it for me. I can go out and buy the games myself. The only thing is the differences in the Arcade and the Platinum packages are the storage size. Arcade is listed as only having 256mb? While the platinum has a 20gb hard disk. My question is, what is the advantage of the hard disk? Could I buy the Arcade version and drop in my own hard disk? An extra 80 bucks for a 20gb drive seems a bit ridiculous to me. Any thoughts?

If she/he loves you, the most expensive one. Elite.

What's the advantage of the HD? Seriously? X360 stores your account profile, game saves, DLC, everything on the HD.

You can't use just any hard drive, you have to buy Microsoft's overpriced hard drive. That's my biggest complaint about the 360, they rape you on the accessories.

Anyway, the 20 GB is $299 now. 60 GB is $349.

If you're going to play online and download demos and all that, get the hard drive.

You could put a 20 or 120 gig HD in the Arcade. The 120 gig is $180, way too much IMO. Not sure about the prices of the 20 gig. The just took marked down the price of the Platinum w/ 20 gig HD down to 300 so if you could find that in a store i would definitely get that. They are replacing the platinum 20 gig with a 60 gig HD but keeping the price the same. Just something to think about.

If you are going to be playing Live and want to take advantage of all it has to offer, I would definitely get the HD, it is worth it and if you can get it for 20 bucks more than the arcade then thats a good deal IMO.

No, you can't drop in your own hard disk. You have to buy a MS HDD.

You need the hard disk for game updates, DLC, demos, Arcade games, backwards compatibility, streaming Xvid and Divx video, and more.

Also, the 20GB is over-priced at Newegg.com. It is supposed to be $299.99 after a recent price drop. (they are clearing out the 20GB 360s). I don't know why they have it at $349.99. That's the price for the new 60GB 360. And, as noted in another thread I just posted, there are price drops rumored for September which bring the 60GB down to $299.99.

You'll want to get a 360 with a HDD. Trust me.

Alright cool. Sounds like the 20gb is the way to go. I'll see if I can find a Platinum package locally for $300. I didn't realize the prices dropped, so that's good. I guess Newegg hasn't updated there's yet. Has Gran Turismo 5 come out for Xbox yet?

I bought the elite myself but I'd get the 60 gig version if I was buying right now. 20GB isn't very much, especially with all the new stuff MS is doing with the HD (cacheable disc games, Live games, movie downloads, DLC, etc) and the elite isn't a very good value since all it really gives you is more space and a hdmi cable.

Gran Turismo 5 isn't coming out till 2010 for the Playstation 3. So it would be after that if that were ever to happen, highly doubt it though. I recommend picking up Forza 2 or PGR 4 for your racing needs.

Gran Turismo 5 will never come out on the Xbox 360. Polyphony Digital is owned by Sony. Sony owns Gran Turismo.

Gran Turismo 5 is exclusive to the PS3.

Aww that's balls. How are Forza and PGR as far the variety of cars you can drive? That was always the coolest thing about GT for me. They had a huge number of cars to drive and customize.
As far as hard disk space goes, I probably won't be going crazy with all the stuff you guys are mentioning. I don't expect to be playing it more than a couple hours a week.

There is, however, Forza Motorsport 2, which some of us feel compares quite favorably to GT5.

Forza 2 is as close to a true competitive sim to GT:5 that you'll find. Many think the physics in Forza are better than GT even though GT has better graphics. A group of us from this forum get together to race every Wednesday night at 9PM EST. There is a large selection of cars to customize and paint and the online racing is a blast.

PGR4 is extremely enjoyable as well but it is an arcade/sim hybrid. Not alot of customization.

The next iteration of Forza will likely come out before GT:5 come out. There's also another sim coming out called Race Pro

Even if you're only playing a couple of hours a week, you're still going to want a HDD for game updates and such. One of the neat features coming up in the Fall Update is the ability to copy the entire game to your HDD. You still need to have the disk in the drive but that cuts down the noise and the loading times.

Great post!

I'm going to go home and burn my 360 after reading it.

Forza doesn't have quite as many cars as GT4 did. Not sure how many GT5 will have. But with the GT series, even though there are tons of cars, a huge number of them are virtually identical. You might have a 1993 Acura NSX, and then also a 1994 Acura NSX, with little or no difference between them. Sometimes they have special cars that are identical but are available in a different color. So don't be fooled by the number of cars in the GT series - in Forza, most cars is distinctly different from each other (except for race cars which are often simply reskinned).

The other nice thing about Forza is the visual customization. In GT, you can't even repaint your car, much less customize the appearance. Forza lets you apply whatever designs you want. There are also a lot of rims, spoilers, and body kits to choose from.

My favorite thing about the GT series is the track selection. Forza doesn't have nearly enough tracks, and they're all standard circuit tracks. GT has some rally tracks. And the graphics are better.

Thanks for all the responses. I've got one last question. Looking at hooking the 360 up wirelessly. Will it use a usb wifi card? I've already got a D-Link WUA-2340 I can use. Or does it require a special microsoft wifi adapter?

Microsoft likes to rape you on the accessories. You'll need to buy their adapter or use a wireless bridge.

AMC, go to ebay and get a Linksys WGA54G - it is a wireless game adapter. It works perfectly with the 360...and i got mine off ebay for like 40 bucks. I wasn't about to spend $100 on the MS wireless one. It's easy to setup too..plug it into your router, run the software, and you're good to go. All you do then is put it near your 360 and plug a cat5 from the adapter to the Xbox.

And what I also did to save a little cash was get the Arcade 360, and bought a used hard drive from Gamestop for $50. You can sell that 256MB card on ebay and make a little money, or use it as trade-in on the hard drive..I think they gave me $12 credit. Doesn't seem like much but if you wanna save a little money, it's one way to go.
