Which Xbox 360 to get?

I am interested in getting a 360. Have a couple of questions about which version to get:

Is there any reason to get an older elite console?

Can someone list the differences (if any) between the 350gb S version and the 'super elite Splinter Cell' version?

Anybody have any idea when the next gen consoles are coming out? They all have been out for a while now.

Thanks!

Old ones: less reliable, louder, no built in wifi. Supposedly more friendly to hack for piracy.

Slims: all the same except for HD size and paint job.

Next console: not this year, probably not next year either. MS and Sony want to make money off the 360 and PS3 they don't have a good reason to sink billions into a new console launch any time soon.

There are a couple other differences as well. The Slims are Kinect ready, meaning you don't have to have an extra power brick to power the Kinect, and the Slims also don't have the old 360 Memory Units - they take only USB thumb drives.

What about the difference between the 250gb S version and the 'super elite Splinter Cell' version?

Anyone know?

Other than the game and extra controller...

The Splinter Cell bundle 360 seems to be a Jasper version, which is the hardware edition they made just before they released the slim.

Jasper has 65nm GPU and 65nm CPU. The slim uses a 45nm combined chip. This makes the slim use less power overall, but I find it makes the slim warmer in a focal sense compared to my 360 (which is an older Falcon console). Can't say whether that makes a difference yet with slim 360s. Jasper also has no Kinect port and no integrated wireless.

For all that's holy, do not grab the old model - they are loud as hell. No idea about the newest ones, 'S', but they can't be any worse, that's for sure.

The fans on my Falcon Elite felt like someone was drilling a hole in my head - the moment I was turning it off was the best part of playing on it. Never again.

I googled it and it looks like an update made it so all 360's can use thumb drives for saving profile information and game saves. That's pretty awesome; this means that you can get a 360 without a hard drive and use a thumb drive that you have laying around instead of bending over for the prices of the MS drives.

Correct. My response was just to point out that they removed the two Xbox Memory Device slots from the front of the new slim model.

Yes you can use a 1GB or larger USB Thumb drive on any Xbox 360, new or old design. However, you are limited to 16GB per device, and 32GB of USB storage per system.

Thanks for the responses. Now it seems Amazon doesn't have any 250GB slims (without Kinect that is). 🙁

This. I wouldn't consider a non-slim version.

I have no idea why you would buy the old console unless you were super strapped for cash. Hell i have an old 360 elite that i would trade for a slim in second.

Not sure about the splinter cell version of the 360, but im assuming it just comes with splinter cell and maybe a bigger HD?
