One with a well armed private security force include crew served weapons and armored vehicles.

do you know anyone who has been to any of these?
i have been to the Coral Hamaca Resort (formerly Hilton Hamaca Coral), Santo Domingo, and yes, as someone has mentioned the resort should have armed guards. ours did.

Any place that needs armed guards sounds like a crappy vacation destination

It's just that there are so much better options if you want to go on a tropical vacation. And yes. it's certainly a third world country with much poverty, the need for armed guards etc. That's not to say that's its without beauty and redeeming factors, but I sure as hell wouldn't go there.

These are just some of the places you could go that IMO would be a much better time:

Bermuda
St. John
Hawaii
Turks and Caicos
Maldives (Serious $$$)
French Polynesia (Serious $$$)
