1ghz tbird
256mb generic pc2100
ti4600 @ 325/700 (it was higher but I was getting crashes in ET)

Should I upgrade the cpu or RAM? I get lag even on low res in ET.

Try to pick up some ram when it's free or cheap since you already have generic. For example, OfficeMax had free after rebate 256 Kingston 2100 ram for free on Friday.

As for the CPU, how far you can upgrade depends on the board you have.

I'm running XP home, but why would that make a difference? The minimum is 64mb for XP home. But thanks for the help, I'm trying to find some more RAM. You think with 512 RAM I'll be able to play HL2?

XP Home is a memory hog. Most people I know have at least 512 MB of RAM with that OS.

More RAM will definately help especially with XP. The more the merrier :)
Also a CPU upgrade would help too. What Motherboard are you using?
You should get the maximum speed CPU available for the Motherboard and plug it in.
It wouldn't be all that expensive. 1.0 - 1.5GHz+ is cheap these days.

But if you don't want to upgrade the CPU, do the RAM.
