The best deal right now is a 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro. You could probably take it upto radeon 9800 XT levels (412/365) and is way faster than a 9600XT. You'll blow your mind when you see the difference with Battlefield: 1942.🙂
I currently run a 9800Pro in MY RIG (I AM the Daddy, of course!)! But the topic of this post was for around $80-$85 what Video Card would you get? My newest Nvidia card is a GF3, I am LOST by their numbering format (52xx,56xx,57xx,etc...) and their designations (Ultra, Non-Ultra, etc..). I couldn't seem to find a Nvidia card that performs as good as a 9600Pro for the price of a used 9600Pro (again, $80-$85). If I wanted to drop another $175+ on a card, then yes, I'd get my son a 9800Pro.

Creig, that is one FANTASTIC thread. All of the information one could ask for, in one single package! VERY nicely done, PROPS to you pal! I have added it to my favorites.

Tom's review shows a 128bit (380/675) 9800SE as typically performing between a 9600pro and xt. I have a hardcopy PC modder mag showing a slower core 128bit (325/680) typically slightly underperforming a 9600pro. On the basis of that, I would expect your 256bit to slightly outperform the 9600xt.

However, the Xbit review from last year shows your 256bit (380/680) really only holding par with the 9600xt at best, which I find a bit surprising. Notice their slow 128bit (325/540!) gets decimated on those comparisons.

So, I guess I should revise my statement to say a 256bit 9800se is equivalent to 9600xt. Nice that they are known to o/c like crazy though! Good luck with yours ...

Thanks for the info! I often refer to the THG VGA Charts III as a good reference chart. Unfortunately I couldn't get the Xbit link to work. I will google for it later. I am considering swapping out his GF3 for the 'familys' 9800SE. I am also considering that 9500NP -> 9700Pro moddable card. It looks as though I am going to take the low dollar route for right now though. I just got a PM saying the guy is backing out of my hardware sale (there goes $60 I was planning on using).
