I have an option to purchase a VisionTek 3870X2 OC version for the same price as a 4850.
I know this is overkill for my current setup, but i plan on building a new rig pretty soon. What are your thoughts??

4850

worst case scenario you get slightly worse performance (in some cases better) but you'll have the simplicity and efficiency of a single GPU setup

Easily the 4850.

Never ever go multi-GPU unless you cannot get the same performance from single GPU for a similar price.

set up a poll. you'll probably get 75 votes for 4850 and 1 or 2 for 3870x2.

4850 is my vote btw. :)

I think the 4870 is also about the same price as the 3870x2 so you might want to take a look at that. But between those two 4850, it runs better in some games and price to performance is much better.

Definitely 4850. With rebate and discounts, you can pick one up for $150 now.

This goes to show the folly of CrossFire with old cards. The original concept of Xfire was to add power to cutting edge tech if you have the cash. Then it became an idea that if your old cards were becoming obsolete, then you can add another one and get some more life out of that. Unfortunately the tech innovation is such that the new stuff is usually 2x as good as previous generation, and the price continues to stay fairly constant. So you basically gain nothing if you go crossfire with old cards.

that's often true, but not always. when you have a strong arch like g80/g92 and don't double the performance when going into the next gen, you have situations like we have now where 8800gt sli can often be a better option than going to gtx 260/80.

Sounds like i should go with the 4850!! I do plan on buying a 26" monitor, still think the 4850 is a better choice if i will play games at it's native resolution? 1920 X 1200
