Which would be my best option for dealing with a 35mph over speeding ticket?

I got a ticket about a week ago going 85 in a 50. It was stupid I know, you guys don't have to tell me that 😛 I called about a deferral and they said I'm eligible but it is $152 + Loss of license for 90 days to get it. It's going to be the middle of July before I get my license back which really really really sucks...

I've read over some stuff at ticketassassin.com about contesting by mail but don't understand a few things. If I decide to contest by mail can I still go for the deferral if found guilty? And has anyone here ever contested by mail and lost?

I really don't mind paying the $152, but I'd like to get out of the 90 day loss of license if possible. Is there any way to? 🙁

If you contest you drop the deferral.

If you can afford to be without your car for 90 days (or willing to risk getting caught, which I don't recommend) I'd take the deferral.

You only contest by mail for the non-serious stuff, like parking tickets. If real money, or worse, points, are on the line, you want to go to court.

GO TO TRAFFIC SCHOOL TO GET IT OFF UR RECORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i got caught going 80mph in a 40mph zone in california, i still had my provisional lisence so i wasnt supposed to have anyone under 25 with me and i did, and i wasnt supposed to drive after midnight and i did. lets just say i had a very big ticket but i went to traffic school to get it off my record, just pay the crap and go to school for it

Holy crap!

You were 40 over the speed limit... after midnight... with illegal passengers.

You people need to slow the hell down! 😛

Why not just write them a check?

because it's $186 plus my insurance will skyrocket, I'm 17. not to mention I don't want a 35 over ticket on my record.

Oh. This is an easy fix. You buy a time machine (don't forget the crystals) and go back in time, beat the crap out of yourself for doing this. I'm not here to guilt trip you because I'm sure you've got enough of that from yourself, but if you don't want something on your record, not doing it is the best way to stop it.

Your best chance is to hire a lawyer. Judges aren't stupid. You got caught doing 35 over, I doubt you have any chance of this not going on your record or getting out of paying it.

Traffic school probably won't be an option at 35 over, either.

Be lucky that most states wipe the slate clean when you turn 18. Don't know if insurance companies do to, but that's the price you pay.

I know people should say "can't do the time, don't do the crime", but in a city where I live, if you lose your license for speeding or whatever, you simply drive without it for a while. There's no realistic way around it. And no, I've never gotten one.

Go to court and talk to the presecutor. Thats your best chance. Oh and take a driving class BEFORE you go to court.... bring the certificate from the class with you.

Can't help but say you're really SOL on this one. I don't know if insurance will increase the points because you sped more. Not to be mean but hopefully they do, because when I was caught going 34 in a 25, I got 2 points. If you're going 80+ in a 50 and got caught, well I just hope that you're not in the same speeding category as I am according to insurance.

The officer should've arrested you on the spot for wreckless driving.
I drive wreckless every day to work as do 99% of the people out there 😛 It should be commended, not condemned!

Didn't know before you were 17, I would DEFINITELY take the deferral.

Even if it means walking & riding the short bus for the next 90 days.

My brother got out of 90 in a 55 (at 17 yo) with deferred adjudication. Ticket was ~$450, deferred adjudication + traffic school + clean record for six months cost him like $120 in the end.

I got out of a ~$450 careless driving under the same deal (same judge/court). Mine wasn't anything blatantly irresponsible though.

Wow...what state is this in? In Virginia you would have been arrested on the spot and lost your license for much longer. You're lucky as hell!

I once got pulled over for doing about 100 in a 45, officer pulls me over, talks for a bit - then says, "Don't let me catch you again, stay safe." Denver cops usually rock.

What is deferred? Just instead of a high ticket you transfer some of that money into more time without your license?

Just because something CAN be done doesn't mean it WILL Be done. I'd suspect most people would not be arrested for this, because most cops have done the same thing themselves and know it.

Deferred Adjudication

Typically you pay the court fee, go to traffic school, & then stay out of trouble for 3-6 months.

If you're clean after that the ticket gets dropped.
