The fastest of them all would be a oc'd P4 2.66 with granite bay chipset motherobard, two DDR SDRAM memory modules to take advantage of the dual channel memory controller.

I disagree. An athlon xp 2600+ would blow that apart. No contest. Get an Nforce 2 and 2x512 ddr 333. T Breds and P4 northwoods both overclock like hell so either way it'll be pretty fast. When you increase a T Bred b in clock speed its equal to more than when you oc a p4, since of the icp of axps.. Nforce 2's have been known to run stablily at 400fsb, so it'll oc fine. Have fun .

and the T-bred's are unlocked so you can change the multiplyer and stuff

there are no ddr2 motherboards, or chipsets for that matter, out right now
when they do come out though it'll be great

granite bay wasn't too amazing
nforce2 is better

yeah make sure you get good quality memory
the 2400+ athlons look the best price/performance
and plus you can upgrade to a barton from there next year. gives you an upgrade plan

tstrike, further analyzing, don't get the 2.66, get the C1 version of the P4 2.4B at Atacom - cost less but still will getcha 3.2GHz. Plus with granite bay, all you need is DDR266 memory in pairs to get the performance now available with 1066MHz RDRAM memory. Set up two 512MB DDR333 SDRAM Memory modules on your granite bay mobo for a total of 1024MB and you'll be plenty happy when you pair it with your P4 2.4B oc'd to 3.2GHz. Granite bay mobos should appear in a week or so. Both the Asus P4G8X and Gigabyte 8INXP are very impressive. Please chronicle your adventure with this setup in this forum if it's no too much trouble. Good day!

I see the usually amd boys arrived....The fact is I still have yet to see numerous post here of ppl ocing any great numbers with 2600+ chips....I agree get a c1 2.26 or 2.4 and take advantage of lower multplier giving you higher fsb for ocing memory and bandwidth.....


The fact is even when the amd is stock and with nforce 2 chipset a like pr rated amd will do equal to a p4 at similar speed.....

Video editing in most of the programs I run are sse2 optimized as well as in a lot of rendering programs now making rendering times mere seconds....


Overall despite what the amd croonies always say the p4 c1 stepping chip will likely clock higher then the amd can and thus give you a bit more....At lower 2400-2800 range p4's are comparable if not lower then like amd chips....

unless you get a very exceptional 20x CPU it's likely to hit it's mhz ceiling at a lower fsb than the 16x and now some 18x CPUs are capable of and the higher fsb with the all other components and settings(including mem timmings) the same will yield higher bandwidth.

while a 2.4
will be only

planning to get a Thermalright AX-478 with Thermaltake 75cfm fan
with a gb mobo
i will prob buy a samsung 2700 or an xms 2700 512 X 2 for total of 1gb

with the samsung and xms what is max fsb will i hit?

FACT: Most C1 2.66s can get 3.2GHz aircooled
Most 2600s top out at around 2.4GHz aircooled

Yes, I do realise Athlons have higher IPC, but even then, an AXP 2.4GHz *cannot* compete with a P4 3.2GHz...

Just look at a 2.25GHz 2800+ and a P4 3.06GHz and you'll get a fair idea of the gap between a P4 2.66 @ 3.2 and a 2600+ @ 2.4GHz.
