AMD Athlon?64 X2 4600+ Dual-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology
vs
Intel® Core? 2 Duo E6300 CPU @ 1.86GHz 1066FSB 2x1MB L2 Cache

Also how does the core 2 compare to my current intel pentuim 4 2.66GHz

The e6300 would be faster. Couple that with the fact that you can oc the heck out of the Core 2's and it makes it that much better.

Regardless, if you're thinking of upgrading, any one of those processors would run circles around that P4.

The X2 4600 would be slightly faster in some apps, if both processors are at their stock speed. But, overclock both to their max, and the E6300 wins hands down.

edit: Forgot to answer your second question. Both of those processors are ~twice as fast as a 2.66 Ghz P4.

The X2 would be like 3-5% faster when they both are at stock speed...overclocked...the C2D will blow the X2 away...

If you plan to overclock, then the C2D would be the best choice....but if you plan to keep everything at default..then the X2 combo would be a little bit faster and maybe even a bit cheaper.

The E6300 and x2 4600+ will trade blows. But the E6300 will be the better performer in performance per clock/watt area. And it consumes less power too.
But the x2 4600+ will be cheaper to be build thanks to very cheap quality motherboards.
Both are much faster than the P4.

Like most ppl said it the E6300 when overclocked will blow away the 4600+ but at stocks speeds both cpu's will give almost the same kind of performance.

At stock speeds the 4600 will be about 5% faster, but as everyone says the E6300 overclocks much better.

Yeah, technically, i'd say the 4600+ is slightly better (as long as you're using good RAM).

But if you overclock, the E6300 will blow any Athlon 64 away.
