Which would be a better upgrade

So, i recently put together a Quad Q9300, which I am going to keep. The memory I purchased DDR3 1333 started to show errors (no overclocking & at stock speeds) and so, I am sending them back for a refund and looking at faster options.

I am thinking about the new Cell Shock 1866 memory. Currently they're priced seriously high, 394$ totally stupid price... The upgrade and replacement of my AMD platform came out to 384$ This AMD machine use to be my gaming platform and is still good under my configuration in sig. I'd imagine if i was using a higher res, larger screen, it would suffer harder fps hits. If I were to upgrade, it'd be: e7200, P5K- e P35, & 4G or PC 800 or above.

Does this AMD platform still hold a good resale on the market? I also have 2Gb of DDR 400 2.2.2.5
Would the e7200 platform be better or be a lateral move? uses: gaming UT3, COD4, Crysis, BF2, Red Orchestra and daily uses and would the e7200 consume less power/$$$ over the AMD?

Thanks for your time

e7200>>fx60. At stock speeds it's probably ~ 25% faster, but it should OC a lot better, too. A 50% cpu improvement after overclocking would be a rough estimate. however, fx60 still goes for lots of money since skt939 is so hard to replace these days. I sold my opteron 180 a couple months ago for $110 on fs/ft, and I got 5 offers within an hour at that price. Back then fx60's were going for 2-3 times as much as my cpu. you might try ebay and just see how high the suckers bid it up ;)

as long as you get $200+ out of the fx60 then I think it would be hard to pass on upgrading the gaming rig.

Don't waste the money on ultra-expensive ddr3, it will come down next year as nehalem and am3 start to ship in volume.

the prices are ~ the same whether i went with a new replacement platform for the AMD, or if i went with the DDR3 1866... i mean, yeah, that is also a new system but I am considering unloading my AMD platform and upgrading it.. I just don't want to spend the money all in one shot for both the DDR3 and e7200 upgrade

as Chris Tucker said in the movie Rush Hour "DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT ARE COMIN OUT OF MY MOUTH!?!?!" LOL

No, we don't understand the words that are coming out of your mouth.

Are you asking if you should put fast DDR3 in your AMD platform? wtf?

He's asking whether he should continue using the slow DDR3 that he already owns, but is being RMA'd, and build a cheaper E7200/IP35-E/DDR2 system with the money he has, or should he just spend $400 on some fast DDR3, so he can overclock his Q9300.

And you'll definitely want to spend that money on an E7200. An E7200 isn't alot faster than an overclocked FX-60, but once both are overclocked, there's no comparison.

@ jax, i was actually thinking of putting my new Q9300 on hold cause the memory is astronomically expensive for the choice i was thinking = CellShock 1866 = 394$

If I put that rig on hold and upgrade my AMD platform to maybe the e7200, it would cost me relatively 384$

I'm talking about 2 different computers. Yes, i know they are both fine the way they are.

The Quad needs memory. While searching for memory for the Q9300, I started thinking of upgrading the AMD platform. Hence the costs are +/- 10$ depending what route i choose.

Why does the quad need that fast of memory?

Just get some solid DDR2-1066 (or even 1200) which will probably meet/exceed the speed limit of your motherboard fsb.

For most uses the e7200 overclocked to 3.xGHz will be more than sufficient.

Just cause the Q9300 has a multi of 7.5 and being a 45nm, its capable of atleast 3.5Ghz but in order to do that and keep things at 1:2, which is the ideal ratio, memory of 1800 or above is the area to look. But I am starting to think that maybe I can unload the mobo, keep the cpu and pick up a DDR2 board and get about 4Gb or DDR2 800 (80$) for about half the price of that CellShock 1866 and just swap out the chip.
