Could someone tell me which WD black model is the 2 platter and which is the 3 platter? I looked on WDs site but, could not find any platter info.

I think the FAALS and 3gb/s is the 3 platter and the FAEX 6gb/s 64mb cache is the 2 platter. Is that correct?

thx

That is...confusing as hell.

So, its possible even the Sata-300 32mb cache model could be 2 platter as well, even though most of them arnt. : /

thx.

Yep, I bought a WD1001FALS in january and got a 2 platter version. I've also heard that there are 3 platter versions of the FAEX.

I'm guessing the end numbers in parenthesis is the number of platters/heads. WD doesn't make it easy, because AFAIK they only release info on the main part of the product number. I've got one of their PDFs on model numbers and it only describes the first ten characters.

WD0000ABCD
WD = Western Digital
0000 = capacity
A = capacity/unit/form factor (F = TB/3.5" new, A = GB/3.5", etc.)
B = business unit/brand (A = desktop Caviar, E = mobile Scorpio, etc.)
C = RPM/buffer size (L = 7200RPM 32MB, D = 5400RPM 32MB, etc.)
D = interface/connector (S = SATA 3Gb/s, B = ATA/100 40-pin, etc.)

if you actually go to his link, you would see the following explanation:
A platter-head ratio is shown next to the total capacity tag in brackets. For example, a drive with a (1/2) ratio has one disk and two read/write heads.

So 1/2 is not 1 OR 2 platters, its 1 platter and 2 heads. (there are double sided platters, and single sided platters. A 1/1 would mean 1 platter with one head, so it means its single sided... a 2/3 means 1 double sided platter and 1 single sided platter.)
