98. ME is slower and has a few more features, but they aren't worth the slowness.

Vote for WinMe here.... I have had no problems on any of my 4 computers... however others do have problems... which I can never emulate.. maybe I do something different... anyways go with 98SE :) Just because I do not ever have problems does not mean others do not.

All I can tell you is. STAY AWAY FROM ME. I've got no idea why it crashes every 30 minutes even if I underclock and reset all my settings to default. :). I tried to configure my pc for a month and it's the same @#$^.

Go with Win98Se. :)

arch, i have said this in previous posts.. i use a different os's.. and im not advocating ME, and saying its good, and if i had to have just one box, and it had to have win, it would be 2k.. but thats not the case, so I'm running ME on this box, i use it a bit for games and postin on here... and I never have any problems.. seriously, they Via SB+686B bug, i didnt have it until i installed the "fix" for it, but then i installed 4.32 and all was well.. as far as locking up every 30minutes .. let me see .. ya this box has been on for 140 hours, i usually let it go to about 160 and reboot, dont have to.. i just do.. seriously, the only time i ever have ANY problems whatsoever is when i run this software
http://www.testout.com , its a <ug> MCSE CBT, and its buggy,.. but not in Unreal, No Ie problems, no media player problems, not even in EA sports games .. i never have any probs with it.. maybe its just luck.. or maybe i'm not cool enough to join the bandwagon <g> well i dunno .. jus my 2cents ..

Out of the two I prefer ME, since 98se was so unstable for me. But the only OS I use now and I plan on using even when XP comes out is Windows 2000! It is far superior to any 98 kernel based OS.

I dont have any issues with ME. Speed is nearly identical to SE. It is a little more restrictive, and if you run DOS applications then not exactly the better choice. It has a nicer look to it than SE, and you won't have to perform as many updates to it as you would SE

lol...no thats just crap....win ME is not unstable or slow......some people just let their old chevettes go i guess...lol
but like a few have asked...if it is at all possible you might want to consider 2k...little slower to boot but you really like it when you get use to it

jus thought i'd add, i understand the dos implementation in winME.. and maybe most applications dont work right, but i run BorlandC++ 5.5 and turbodebugger commandline tools, without any problems whatsoever in ME ..

I go weeks without a reboot on my WinMe machine... Works good for me, and I do a ton on this machine... I play maxpayne... watch DVDs, burn CDs... surf the web all day.... My computer is STABLE! :)

No reason for Win2K because I am stable enough already....

Oh well, I am partial to WinME because it is more attractive interface, and no BSODs ever... I got them with WIN98

Some kids here seem to be having problems with Windows ME. Well, all I can say is that it's much more stable (crashes and leaks less) than Windows 95/98[SE], and even if it is 10% slower, you'll never notice that with your machine. However, you will notice less crashes (if any) than with Windows 95/98[SE]. I deleted the useless new Media Player and Movie Maker it came with, and the rest makes it not much larger than Windows 98[SE].

I could not get my PC to go into sleep mode (or come back from it) on Windows ME though. Could be because of the ACPI madness I had going on.

WinME is + or - 1% of Win98SE

I tested both many times.....

The performance difference either way is negligable.

Windows 2K is so freakin SLOW! It constantly performs unnecessary disk activity, it has dozens of services running in background, and its default look is ugly ;) Also, some videocards have worse performance with Win2K than 9x..

Amen, most of the time performance is slower in Win2K.... There is also some compatability problems with Win2K

Another vote for WinMe. I run it on my gaming Rig and its alot more stable than any Win98 installation i've had. It will usually crash once ever 6-7 days.

Win98SE. I tried WinME on a PC which previously was running Win98SE without problems. It ran dog-slow, crashed like every 30 minutes and gave constantly 'out of memory' errors. The only good thing about ME is that after a crash you've got the system quickly back online because it boots really fast.

I recommend Win2k though. Especially if you're not really a gamer, you'll love Win2k. This system I've running (Duron 600, 384 MB RAM) runs rockstable, even after 22 days uptime without rebooting.
