I'm in Los Angeles and driving to Detroit in the morning. I'm still trying to decide whether to go through Utah and Colorado, a 34 hour drive, or through Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas and then up, a 40 hour drive. The time isn't necessarily the deciding factor, so any suggestions?

Snow in the mountains could be an issue. Otherwise, pick the route with the most interesting potential stops.

I dont know how you got the drive times but google maps shows only 100 mile, 1 hour difference between those routes. And considering that the northern route takes you through big ass mountains, the southern route may even turn out to be faster. I've driven both and just based on ease of driving, I would choose the southern route as I did not particularly enjoy driving through the mountains in the winter. Of course if you want to see sights along the way then it's up to you which route interests you more. The northern route has better scenery with the utah desert and colorado mountains.
