Which was your card before GeForce 3 and are you satisfied with the upgrade? (and why did you do it?)

geforce 2 GTS. I wanted the same abilities as m2super. The gf2 gts wasn't cutting it and I spent about the same on it (bought it one year ago). I'm willing to spend the same $300 every year if it lets me play all the latest/greatest games with all the bells & whistles.

I had a Geforce 2 Ultra. I got a Geforce 3 cause of all the wonderful things people were saying about the Geforce 3. It really made me happy while I had it. But after I got my laptop, I didn't use my desktop so much so I sold it since I spend all my time at my gf's. I plan on building myself another desktop this fall and it will most likely feature some kind of NVIDIA high end card.

you either have too big wallets people or else..I cant figure out anything else for your "problem"
In the days before Voodoo appeared with its 3d graphic accelerator the games weren't playable ? Cummon...
Those days the games had far more bigger trill in them, not like today, today we have immitations of reality not games.
You get a kickass 3d game, play it for 3-4 days and then you ditch it.. they are all clons of the Quake 1 (speaking of the FPS games)

And going from GF2ultra to another 400$ card when even the potential of the Ultra isnt utilised, this is sickness.

It seems people without GF's buy GF :)

I had a Radeon 64mb DDR, and yes I'm real happy with my upgrade. I basically made the plunge because the opportunity arose to pick up a GF3 for $315. I sold my Radeon for $160, so basically the upgrade only cost me $155. I am very happy with my upgrade. It's nice to know that I can run any game at the highest detail level.

And Gomce, your GF theory is only partially correct. I have no girlfriend not because of my GF3, but because my wife wouldn't allow it. And I love my wife and kids too much to get a girlfriend. ;)

As for my wallet, it's size is just fine. ;) I'm certainly not wealthy, but my wife and kids are taken care of just fine. What's wrong with me spending a little cash on a nice PC upgrade? It's really no different than spending $300 on any other form of entertainment. Would you be just as critical if I'd spent it on a nicer TV or stereo? Probably not.

How about why not be upgrading to a Geforce 3?

Ive got a GF2MX and wont be upgrading to a GF3 because all the latest games at the moment are pants IMO.
As someone else said, theyre all clones.
Quake2 is still my favourite game for online FPS and i wont be changing video card till something comes along that captures my attention like Quake2 did when it came out.
Max Payne and the like? Me not like Third Person Shooters :(
Now, if New Doom/Unreal2 is as great an inovation as Quake2 IMO, only then will i change video card.
Changing video card now for these upcoming titles would be foolhardy IMO when another generation of cards is in the pipeline, which will more than likely be more suitable for these games + all the bells and whistles. Also there will be more of a price choice at that time.
Ive been bitten once before, buying cards in readiness for upcoming games - HW TnL anyone?

Very good points, rockhard. If you still enjoy Q2, then a GF3 really isn't going to enhance your experience any.

There is some sort of a tradition on the forums and in general, that when a new product comes along it is treated like a revolution and it's precessors as "s@#"

TNT - TNT2 was there a major revolution!?
TNT2 - GF256 ? Major?
GF256 - GTS ? Also Major?
GTS - GF3 ?

yes they are new faster improved versions but since the TNT card there wasnt anything revolutionary, only pumped up speed,
and when something is going to come up after the GF3 everyone will stop saying what a good card the GF3 is, and instead they will just say "well, it wasn't such a big deal the GF3, but this new GF4 Really kicks ass, this is the true card, the real Messiah..."

And so on, and so on...
Why dont you stop and say: "My MX is awesome, I wont upgrade, let them improve the games so they will work best possible on my MX"

This is sickness, I am sick from you guys, just upgrading and upgrading...while the games and the software isnt being optimised

Just my 0.2 denars

Wingznut PEZ - Yup, GF3 be a waste.

Why is it that people keep chasing the latest and greatest in video cards when the games are 12 months behind anyway?
Ive had a play with a few cards in my friend's rigs, and having them all in the same room with the same game on them, (removed rose tinted specs and got over the initial excitement) and came to the conclusion that spending 200 bucks didnt give me a worthwhile improvement to my quality of life in game playing.

$300 dollars for a GF3? Heh, $100-150 more you can have an Xbox this fall! hmmm?

My MX200 can play any modern games I've thrown at it that I'm interested in such as:

WW 2 Online
Counterstrike ( :) )
Anarchy Online

Heh...I'm looking at this now, and I was recently considering getting a Geforce 2 Pro...why bother! I get 30fps in Anarchy Online (except in towns - but thats server lag) 30fps in WW 2 OL, and 70-99fps in Counterstrike...all in perfectly adequate image quality.

Anyway I'm assisting to derail the thread, oops.

Actually, an Xbox will run $299. And I have put off purchasing a PS2, because I'll probably get the Xbox instead.

I'm certainly not trying to brag, but if you can afford it, what's wrong with buying a GF3?

Now, now - Some these guys are offering their opinions on why they feel it is hype thats driving people to upgrade all the time. Not knocking people for buying them. Heh, the more people that buy them, the better bug tested the cards are before i upgrade when the games require them :D
Myself, i could quite comfortably go to a site and order 4 GF3's for every rig in my house. But then again, why waste.
A product has to be worthy of my money, not bandwagoned. ;)

Excuse me guys, didn't you read my post?

I had a banshee! :)

Also...
I'm going off to college.
The vid card I buy now will not be upgraded for at least 4-5 years.

In my scenario you buy the latest/greatest so it lasts the longest.

rockhard, it's obvious that you don't deem the GF3 a worthy purchase for what you do. And again, that makes perfect sense.

The problem that I have with this thread, is that it starts out as an innocent question, but the original poster already has his mind made up about it. So, why bother asking?

I think Gomce is jealous because he doesnt have one, so he created this topic to criticize everyone who does. BTW I dont have one, but if I did, it would be just to spite everyone with a slower card. Riiiiiight.

I'm buying one next week. Been saving my pennies. (Literally) I've decided that w/this gaming addiction I have, my money is best spent upgrading to a better videocard (from a GF2GTS 32mb) as opposed to a DDR mobo.

I decided on the GF3 vs. the GF2Ultra b/c the 3 is of the newer architecture and is compatible (at least for the near future ;)) w/upcoming games.

I think it's immature to badmouth or despise or look down on someone who has nicer stuff than you. So what? Maybe they work two jobs (ME!) in order to afford their toys. What's it to you?

Maybe some members of this forum make 75K a year; so what? Who am I or anyone else to begrudge them what they've worked so hard to attain. Not everyone on this board is 18 years old. Some of us ARE older and HAVE worked at Taco Bell, or the Public Library (me) and have been there, where you are now, frustrated with $6/hour, if that. You'll get there. And when you do, you can pay rent, electric, cable, phone, food, insurance, health care AND Child Support. Take your time...it's allllllll there, waiting for you!

It aing sore grapes, just that there aren't games at the moment, and you always have the urge to upgrade, like
I have PXXI 22.2 GH o/c and GF16 Ultra XXALS and 14TB of data, and 170" LCD display mounted on my neighbours house :) and... I don't know what to do with myself, oh, my PC is probably outdated, I am going to upgrade my 170" Lcd and going to buy 1450" and mount it on the Stadium :)
I was online reffiring to this upgrade feaver
