Which video cards "do" 16x9 correctly?

Hi, y'all....

I have this nagging question.

I'll be soon looking into getting a 16x9 TV set OR monitor (providing that prices will be good to me :) ).

And somehow I don't think my GF2 GTS will be able to take advantage fully of this type of display. The image will be squished to fit all the screen or I'll have nasty vertical bars on both sides of my image.

So which current cards will recognize - and provide correct resolutions - for a 16x9 display?

Thanks for help!

well, if the set your getting has dvi, your card should do 1920x1080 which is 16x9 and is the resolution of 1080i hdtv so you will be looking good there.

if your planning on hooking the pc to it for sure, i wouldnt get a set without dvi.

As I said, I currently have a Geforce2 GTS. There no DVI on that card.

So my question is - Which cards will be adequate for this setup, I'm not asking about specific TV sets.

Actually wouldn't 1920X1080 really be the resolution of the (theoretical) 1080p, since progressive resolutions render every line (like computer monitors) while 1028i, 720i, 480i are all interlaced?

As for which video cards support 16X9 (ie HDTVs), I know the 9800 AIW does, I'm pretty sure the 9700 AIW does, but I'm not sure if the 9800 Pro does or which Nvidia cards do (if any).

Also, if you're looking for a system to hook up via TV-out, an HDTV would be sweet, but if you're looking to use it as a primary display, I'd recommend a CRT or LCD monitor instead.

I would think your GF2 GTS should support some 16x9 resolutions, if not natively, surely with powerstrip. My radeon, like all radeon cards support 16x9, and I use powerstrip and Karnis's guide at AVS forum to output to my widescreen display....using both VGA and component outputs/inputs.

all nvidia cards geforce 1 and above can support widescreen resolutions with the nvidia reference drivers.

DVI out did not work in widescreen until the new 52.16 version. it works now which is great, since it looks better in DVI on my monitor than analog did.

i have used a lot of cards, and i doubt it makes a difference for 2d only. currently i am using a geforce 4mx 440-8x dvi 64bit bus card that cost me $30. it works great.

The issue is not supporting 16X9 resolutions (which, yes, basically all modering GPUs support), but which ones support HDTV output.
