Which Video Card

I have about $200 to spend and I am a gamer going to college for engineering. I need a video card that will be stable in the CAD programs and in games. Which one should I get? The Radeon64mbDDR or some GeForce 2mx or GTS?

Radeon 64VIVO!

I have a Radeon 32DDR, and it waxes the floor with a GeForce2 in terms of 2D and 3D image quality. I can't play CS on my friend's computer with a GeForce2MX because of the vast difference in image quality. It is no slouch either. I play CS in 1024x768 with 4x FSAA and get around 40 FPS average with a max of around 90 FPS (this is on an old PII-450).

Anyone who tells you that ATI drivers stink is smoking something. I'm using the 3056 drivers, and I've never had a problem, and I have not come upon a game I couldn't run.

If you have 200$, DEFINATELY go wif the Radion. Because if you are looking for a 32Mb card that is better for the price, ATI will take it in this case. But if you get a lil more (400$) then go with the GeForce 2 64Mb. It can do what almost no other card can. But for the 200$, go with the Radion!!!!

<< Can you explain why the Radeon will be dissapointing? >>

It is because he subcribes to the "if it isn't Nvidia, it MUST suck" theory, which is of course wrong.

"I play CS in 1024x768 with 4x FSAA and get around 40 FPS"

i think this explains why the radeon "sucks"

for the record i dont think the radeon sucks but most people view 40 fps as horribly slow, i think were all just spoiled

OK, in general:

Radeon = Better image quality than a GeForce

GeForce = Higher FPS in games than Radeon

Do you want maximum power or maximum image quality? The Radeon will almost certainly be better in CAD applications, I recall a review in which the GeForce was dropping polygons and pixels like mad in 3D rendering software.

really? I'd like to see that review (so I can rag on nVidiots 😛) before I go out saying that..

prior to that, I always thought that the best consumer cost (~$200 in other words) video card for CAD was the Geforce series..

I think Benskywalker would also agree with me..

however, I'd have to agree with all others here, for everyday use, the Radeon simply wins. it's got great price (recent price drop), alot of features, pretty good speed, etc.

my only problem with buying a Geforce or Radeon, is that to get UT to work well, I'd have to jump through a few hoops.. There'd probably be a few other games that I have that wouldn't necessarily like the switch (from 3dfx cards) either.

Get a Radeon 64MB Vivo over a GF2 GTS. GeForces don't have very good 2D quality, and the Radeon has a much wider feature set (as regards to DX8) than a GF2 does.

Yeah, and the bottleneck is most likely my CPU, not my Radeon! I also play CS in 16-bit, not in 32-bit where the Radeon really shines. I usually get 60-70 FPS on average, but it does drop to around 40 when I have like 10 guys around me.

Thanks Guys looks like I am buying a Radeon!!
I heard the Retail has some advantage over the OEM when buying a 64mb with VIVO. Is this true?

Head over to the For Sale Forum, a guy was selling Retail Radeon 64 VIVOs for 165 shipped, in that case go for it. The faster RAM would allow you to overclock a little higher.
