hi i bought a hp pc. incredibly quiet, the loudest things in this pc is the cd and dvd writer drives!, anyway, id like to know, if i disable the onboard video and use 512mb of rma for the system and plug in a agp4x geforce2pro, would performance increase? it's only a temp holdover until the 6600gt comes in. in a few weeks!

A GeForce2 is generally faster than anything onboard.

However, it will make noise and take power. Watch your power supply.

Your first sentence is completely false. An Nforce 2 chipset with integrated graphics is just as fast, if not faster than a GeForce 2.

You're correct if you're assuming that an HP PC will typically be intel-based and use "intel extreme" integrated graphics (which tend to suck).

OP: What chipset does your motherboard use?

Before you do anything make sure you have an AGP slot! 😉

What do you mean "use 512mb of ram for the system"? Typically one would never allocate that much memory to integrated graphics; it makes no sense.

Pretty sure based on what? HP engineered your computer based on what they sold it to you with. By adding a 6600GT you're going to put a much larger strain on your PSU. You should invest in a good one, unless you want to smell burning at some point.

i have a 380w truepower coming with the 6600gt/ what im saying inn the sentence quoted was that my 110w ps could handle my geforce2pro(nv says it should only take 10-15w)

edit its a 754 with a sis si760 chipset, sis 760/aka. mirage 2 onboard video leeching 128mb ram and a sis 964 southbridge. amd a64 3300+(2.4ghz 200x12)

I would vote to keep the onboard stuff for just a couple weeks til the new stuff comes in. No need in spending your time configuring 2 new video cards within a couple weeks of another. Even though both cards use the same drivers, you can still have problems transitioning from the GF2 to the 6600GT when it comes. I doubt there isn't much a GF2 can handle that the onboard can't (and make that much of a difference).

Good luck with whatever you end up doing though!

has anyone run benchies of a geforce2pro 64mb on a a64 3200+ with 512mb ram? winxp sp2? what are the 3dmark 01 scores?

probably around the 3000 range, but i wouldnt bother with a geforce2 right now, not worth it, use your onboard untill your 6600GT arrives.

omg. just benchied it. my system is
amd64 3300+(2.4ghz, 256kb l2 chache 1600mhz system bus)
512mb 3-3-3-8 ram(128mb video ram shared)
sis 760 mirage 2
