Which video card...

Hello one and all, I recently built a new system with a bfg 6800u. My question (without doing all the research needed) is what would be a card that could be used in a gaming system but not to the extreme of a 6800u. Reason is, my wifes friends son is going to build himself a gaming machine and he wants me to recommend him a card that will allow him to play CS, HALO, HL2 and such without lag and decent frames. He had planned on getting a Barton 2600 and I talked him out of that instead (winnie 3000). I had thought possible a 9700 pro. Don't know for sure if he wants to spend the $ on a vanilla 6800. Where does as 6800 with 128 ram fit into the equation?
He has seen my card and knows how it works...I have never seen another worthwhile card perform so I am somewhat at a loss here (nothing to compare mine to)

Any responsible replies would be welcome...

I would prefer if you give me a recommendation without telling me to search...

just the way it is...

thanks

budget was never really mentioned... I just want to give him something that will let him play with no lag and good frames....I think the 9700 pro goes for around $200. He would probably go as high as $300 if he knew he was going to get a noticable improvement.

After looking around on the web he had his eye on maybe a 6800gt. was wondering if he could buy with something cheaper?

will check out the 6600

thanks

Well, it also matters whether or not he is getting a PCI-E board or AGP. If he's getting a PCI-E board get the 6600GT for $200 or the ATI X800 XL for $300. The XL has all 16 pipes enabled and is a killer value at $300. If it's AGP, go with either a 6600GT or if you can find a 6800NU for $250 that'd be a better deal.
