I am shopping for a videocard for my new computer now, my budget is about $200, should I get the Nvidia 5900xt or ATI 9800 pro128? I am a hard core gamer, so which card is better for 3D games? Are there any other cards that I should consider? Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks

If choosing between the 9800 pro and the 5900xt, in most games the 9800pro is superior. I play a lot of BFV and my 9700 Pro kicks my 5900XT's ASS. The 9700 Pro is basically able to turn on 4xAA / 8xAF and get the same framerates in BFV as my 5900XT without any AA/AF.

But there are also games where the 5900XT does well, typically OpenGl games like CoD and some older games that are so fast by now that it doesn't really matter.

Either pay more and get a 6800 for 270 or wait for the 6600 the 9800 and 5900 are a waste of money.

After trying to convince myself to buy a 9800, I have to agree. I'm going to keep playing Far Cry on my Geforce3 (yeah, it actually runs very decent at 1024x768 with low settings) and then I'll get a 6600 GT and play Doom 3.

I can't justify more than $200-$250 for a video card and I can't justify buying a 9800 or a 5900.

The 6600 may do well in Doom but we have yet to see any real tests of it. Since the 9800XT is just slightly behind the 6800NU in everything but Doom, I would assume the 9800 series would be pretty even with the 6800LE in other games... thats just my guess though.

considering a 9800 pro plays all games out right now very well and HL2 is geared towards ATI cards. I would get the 9800pro. yes, the 6600 and the 6800 are better. if you need a card right now, get a 9800pro. However if you are wiling to wait... with computers you can never "wait long enough" to get a part that will last forever. but i think if you wait a bit the 6x00 series is very promissing to be a main stay in vid cards for a few years to come.

my 2 cents.

thanks for all the advices, guys. I've heard that ATI cards get hot easily, so should I worry about 9800 pro's heat issues if I decided to buy it? Also, if I decided to wait for the 6600, when will they come out? Thanks
