I have a Geforce 256 32mb non ddr (first generation) video card and a Matrox G450 32mb card.

Which one is better for gaming?

Is the G450 a newer and better card?

Can't quite remember if it compares to a geforce or a geforce2.

Any help is appreciated.

Sweetness,
Mer.

To answer your question, start here, and page forward. Short version is that the G450 loses to the GeForce 256 SDR.
For the comparison of the SDR, you can check this article and take the numbers from it and translate it over to the benchmark of the G450 since the system configuration appears to be identical for both tests.

gaming? you're got to be kidding right?
edit: neither of those would play today's games.
Remember E3 2000, the video of a TNT2 playing Halo? It was smooth as silk. Look how far we haven't come when Halo runs the same on an R9800Pro as it did on a TNT2 four years ago. :p :D

the matrox g450 is a better card for gaming, it has superior 3d graphics and is faster than the geforce 1. i actually compared it to a geforce 2 mx400 64mb, and the g450 beat it by over 500 points, the image quality of course beat the nvidia card. Matrox also got good drivers, not buggy at all =)

u see, matrox doesn't try to release drivers every month, they will release it when it has been fully tested and mostly flaw free, lol.

It played a video and that's a lot different to playing the game in realtime.
No, IIRC the video itself was recorded off a TNT2 rendering Halo... ;)
I can't find any links specifically stating it was rendered on a TNT2, but the "technology preview" is discussed at gamespot, and they say:
Thanks to newly tweaked graphics, Halo looks amazing. It won a spot in our top action games list more for its huge promise than for actual gameplay. What people saw of Halo at E3 was a real-time technology demo followed by a scripted movie. The real-time demo proved that a midrange machine (by today's standards) could run the game at an acceptable speed in 32-bit color and high resolution. It also demonstrated some remarkable in-game physics, which will be integral to final gameplay. The new movie depicted a very strong multiplayer experience; it showed elaborate vehicle models, aircraft, and individually "skinned" human soldiers.

Then again, you also need to learn to detect sarcasm. ;)

Thanks for all the help.

And thanks to those who decided to posts extremely silly comments too.

Just for the record... GtPrOjEcTX who said neither of the cards would play todays games.
Thank your for your worthless post!

I have the geforce currently installed and with all the graphics settings on low and running 800x600 on a 17" monitor... the frames are pretty decent.
Decent enough to come out first on a few internet servers.

Oh and nick1985.. thank you for your wothless post too... read above as to why.

Everyone else thanks so much for the help.
I've actually ordered an ATI Radeon 9600 128mb.
The 256mb version was closely priced but reviews said that it was clocked slower and had inferior memory.

Sweetness,
Mer.
PS: Sorry I just had to vent about those two other members... is that how you become a Diamond member? By posting silly comments that don't really help me??
At the time I put up the message I was debating which card to install into my system while my new video card was being shipped.

Thanks again guys.

Actually yes, since "Diamond" status is simply based on the number of posts.

That will be quite the upgrade for ya tho. ;)

Exactly. Did anyone ever see a TNT2 rendering Halo in realtime? I think not.
