I’m looking to put together a new build, i7-920/asus p6t deluxe, to be used for photo editing and to try out video editing. Even though I don’t have much time for games, I would like to play some since it’s a new build. My monitor is a 5yr+ 19” lcd at 1280x1024. Which video card do you suggest? As a reference, my current video card is a 6800GTS which was kick ass 5 years ago.

The answer there is: "cheapest after rebate." Models to look at would be the GT210,220, Radeon 4670 or GT240 or 9600GT (lowest end gaming capable cards today, IMO), 8800/9800GT, GT250 or Radeon 4850. That's in increasing order of performance but not necessarily price. Even the sometimes available below $50 4670 should handle 1280x1024 casual gaming just fine.

While high end photo editing software does have some support for GPU-accelerated filters the difference is not worth considering. Any graphics card will work for the basic '2d' work.
