a friend of mine is looking for a new vid card, he plays no games. He plays DivX movies and would like to be able to rip DVD's in the future.

I think he's willing to spend $100ish

AMD 2400+ (1.7g) 512RAM

I had reccomended either Geforce4 TI4200 or ATI 9500

(yes I searched the forum, but the search engine is pretty weak)

DVD / divx playback is straight 2D so any $20 Hot Deal ATI or nVidia will work fine. If using TV-out (instead of a monitor) an ATI card is a better choice, if not the nV card might have slightly better drivers.
