I read at one time what types of Linux are good for certain applications. I've recently tried SuSE linux and thought it was nice looking as well as nice to inclued wine and gimp and star office, all to try on the Live Eval cd.

So what is

Red Hat
Mandrake
SuSE
Slackware

and others for?

redhat's for businesses, newbs and knowledgable people who like confusing os's.
mandrake is for newbs and knowledgable people who enjoy annoying os's.
suse is for newbs, people who want everything done automatically, and linus.
slackware is for people who like to have control.

debian is for people who like a mix of hand-holding and elbow grease.

That's all I can think of.

First the rendition of porn music, now this. You crack me up so much. Keep it coming!

I am a n00b (Linuxly speaking) is Mandrake ok for me. Is it that annoying? Should I run a Mandrake/Red Hat dual boot?

Porn music? You confusing me with someone else? 😛

I started off with redhat myself. I'd say try whatever you want, it never hurts to see the differences, and eventually you will find your own way and that won't be determined by anything said on these boards.

Maybe he's talking about you and caramel....

I'm partial to Debian because it's what I started using back in the day, and I got used to it. I didn't have any other distros easily available until college (98), so I just turned into a debian person. Having a roomate that was a debian developer probably helped too.

Dammit, someone did a typed impression of porn music and it was funny Thought it was you, maybe I am wrong. Lets make a new thread entitled "Your best porn Music impressions"! Think the mods will allow it? I do need help deciding on the distro. Have Mandrake 9, but can get Red Hat easily.

Mandrake 9.0 is good for noobs, and it has quite a few GUI tools for system administration. (diskdrake, drakconf, mousedrake...)

If you want to use GNU/Linux OS's, at the end of the day it wouldnt matter which distro you use. It is purely a matter of opting for what works best for you.
I started with RedHat, moved over the Mandrake, flirted around with a bunch of other distros, then used Slackware for a while, till finally I decided that Debian and Mandrake were the ones I would like to stick with.

I'll guess I'll stick with SuSE for now until I understand the concepts of Linux, otherwise, I'm impressed with the look of the system and what comes with it to begin with. Though sometimes it won't let me type into certain locations for whatever reason...

Do a lot of people buy the cd version for extra apps, support? Otherwise, it's nice to be able to download the stuff for free and not worry about it.
