which version of AIM to get?

My fiancee just got a new laptop, and I'm rebuilding it (xp pro for the OS, cleaned up the crap that it came with, etc.). We both use AIM, but I prefer gaim. She doesn't really want to use gaim, but we both hate the ads and sounds and all the other crap that has been in her recent versions of AIM. So, if I were to go back to a good version, which should I get? Alternative chat clients are out of the question, so please no trillian or miranda or whatever the heck else is out there suggestions. Already said if I could I would put gaim on there. Thanks for any help!

depends if you want to install third party programs such as deadaim, aimutation, or middleman to eliminate the ads and junk. if you do, use the most compatible version with the third party programs.
