well..there are millions of half life players out there, and i guess i've somehow missed the boat. i'd like to play both cs 1.6 and source, dod, and the ability to play all of the free mods (this insurgency thing, goldeneye, etc). i don't understand which game corresponds to which package. dod comes with half life 2? have to pay another 10 bucks on top? i was hoping i could get some help...maybe buy a dvd that includes all of the above without spending more than 40 bucks?

Just get a css, and that comes with SDK source base. On top of that, you'll be able to install insurgency for free

do you want to play the single player games also?

I would get the ultimate package or whatever if you want to play HL1 + HL2 and if you wanna play cs1.6, dod and css

also check out the mod, The Hidden...its scary as hell. i suck at it tho :(

For 1.6, HL1, HL1:Blue Shift, DoD for HL1, etc - all you need is cheapo Half Life 1 or Half-Life 1 Blue Shift game, under 15 bucks in many places. This should be it for all Half-Life 1 related mods:
$8 + ship
http://www.gogamer.com/Half-Li...Id444758VVviewprod.htm
(You missed the boat when this game was $2 on MADNESS special last week :( )

Source:
DoD:Source is not a free mod, you have to buy it (unlike original DoD).

Before, you could buy Half-Life 2 and get CS:S with it. Now, I think they are separate.

HL2 + Episode 1: $25

CS:S, HL2:DM and DoD: $30
http://steampowered.com/v/inde...package&SubId=42&cc=US

i'm only interested in the multiplayer games. so this list is: 1.6, css, dod s, all of the mods. maybe if i can find a deal that has portal in there too i'll buy it (is it good?).

so do i just need the half life 1 and 2 games in order to play the mods? could i buy the bare games seperately, then spend 10 bucks for each one? or would that method be very costly??

stupid packages...just give me the damn game!

You won't find hl2 games for 10 bucks. Packages are actually a good deal since each game would be $20+
HL2: $20
CS:S $20
DoD: $20 or more

I don't care about the mods, but you MUST play HL2 singleplayer, it is fucking awesome. HL1 singleplayer is more awesome but I haven't played it.

No. Only STEAM sells packages.
Other websites/stores sell boxed versions of games, with CD/DVDs.

The HL1 Anthology linked wont install CS 1.6. Only half life 1 and it's expansions. Yes, I know cs 1.6 is an expansion, but Steam considers it a separate game. Only the old school half life 1 cd keys allowed you to get CS 1.6 :)

Source sucks. If you buy Condition Zero, it comes with 1.6.

Don't waste your money on Source. ProMod is coming out soon, anyway.

don't bother. they're not very good, full of idiots and people who spend 24/7 playing so you can't even enjoy the game and die 5 seconds after the round starts then spend the next 10 minutes waiting for everyone else to die.

Get the CS:S, DoD:S, and HL2-DM package. They sell that one retail for $20 or 30 (can't remember) too. With any one of those you should be able to play any of the mods like Insurgency or Goldeneye:Source.

I don't really play much CS:S anymore, but the type of people in DoD:S, HL2-DM, and now Insurgency are no worse than any other games I play.

I would personally stick with a Source package as that is where the newest mods are at (in addition to the above mentioned, stuff like Pirates,Knights,Vikings is cool) and I cannot stand the old HL-based games. Yeah back when CS was in early beta it was the bomb, DoD as well, but now I just can't do it. I even tried giving TFC yet another chance as Quake TF was probably my favorite multiplayer FPS ever, but just couldn't get into it like I used to.

Unless you want to pay the $50-60 for the complete package, then you have everything. I have the old Steam Silver package for $60 in 2004, and even though I don't care much about any of the pre-HL2 games anymore, they were all bonus anyway as what source games I got for that $60 are EASILY worth it alone.

Word. Don't listen to people who say Source sucks.
