I'm a fan of a more barebones approach. I don't think you're going to get an unbiased answer because I don't think there is one; some websites suck, but most Universities have professionally done sites that can only be judged by an individual's aesthetic appeal.

I don't. That text is really hard to read on top of that image.

The reason I chose MIT is because I haven't seen any school daring enough to use a design that's unconventional. Most school websites mentioned here I've either come across something similar somewhere else or just simply don't care for.
