Need to get an ultrabook laptop, something under 13" and no cd/dvd burner. Would prefer an intel cpu, but anything will do. My budget is $600.

My choices:
* HP DM1z, $400'ish
* ThinkPad X120e, $450
* Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-6651, $480

What do you recommend?

Staples has the Samsung Series 3 for $349 right now. i3-2357. Battery life isn't supposed to be great though.

I have a dumb question... What's an ultrabook?
ultrabooks are intel's initiative to get more macbook air like windows machines out. super thin and at least part ssd (some go for ssd caching instead of ssd only). they also are supposed to aim for ~$1000. OP looks like he's looking for an inexpensive ultraportable.

@OP: I don't know what that acer timelineX is specifically so I can't comment. Between the other two, I would go with the lenovo. According to their website though, they have a newer x130e coming out in february.

You need to read your own link. There are no $600 Ultrabooks. Lowest I've seen is probably around $800 and that's sorta "cheating" with the SSD (using SSD caching and normal HDD).

For $600 you will need to give up a couple things.
- CULV CPU (at least the i5/i7 listed)
- Battery life (maybe, some still has great battery life)
- SSD (nope, not gonna happen unless you roll your own)
- 0.8"/20mm thick (many cheap notebooks BARELY miss this so by definition can't be an "ultrabook")

What I did was buy a Dell Vostro v131 when it was on sale ($600 for Core i5 model) and toss in an SSD myself. The v131 is not an ultrabook because it doesn't use a CULV CPU, is not available from Dell with an SSD (uses standard notebook drives) and the battery sticks out of the bottom so it isn't thin enough. However, it gets a super duper 9 hour battery life, and is super thin except for the battery sticking out. The v131 actually starts at $499 for a Celeron - which is still a dual core Sandy Bridge.

Staples has the Samsung Series 3 for $349 right now. i3-2357. Battery life isn't supposed to be great though.

It is more like a netbook on steroids but with poor battery life. Note that Samsung uses the same battery as with some other models, so extended life batteries exist, though they stick out the bottom.

That clears it up. Thanks! :)
