The best I could afford with future upgrades and O/C'ing in mind. At least PC3200.

And 512MB (single channel is fine) is pretty much the accepted "minimum" for good performance in XP.

I ended up going with 1GB of Corsair TwinX PC3200 (2 dimms of 512) with my a64 3000+

512 would be the minimum that I would go for these days.

I would go with this stuff it is PC3500 and cheaper than alot of the performance PC3200's out there its only $105 for a stick of 512MB. It has excellent timings and provides you with some overclocking if you like. Mushkin 512MB PC3500 Level I

Eith this you can either get two sticks now or just add another later on when your feel games/programs need a kick in the butt.

I got this RAM 2 weeks ago from NewEgg - except it was 2 x 256MB for my P4's DUAL-channel setup for $122 for both sticks.

It is rated for 433Mhz and O/C's nicely to 444Mhz . . . unfortunately not enough to run at 1:1 (I need to run 5:4 for my P4-2.80c @ 3.4Ghz).

edit: its CAS rating is 2:3:3
