Two problems i hope someone can help me with:

Sorry for probably a simple question, I have an ATHLON XP 2400+, which type of memory should i be using?. I have two 256 samsung PC2100 ' s.
Is this ok? or should i get some new memory.

Also I have an ASUS A7NX Deluxe M/B (BIOS VER 1002.A ) and am having a few problems.

1. When leaving the bios, save changes and exit, the computer does not reboot just freezes. Sometimes with random characters on the screen.

2. I am not sure if it is meant to auto detect the CPU but it always recgnises my CPU as an 1800+ not a 2400+, unless i set it up manualy.

I cant get much help off the asus website so please anyone with help to either problem it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

If you're running your processor with a 266MHz bus, then PC2100 memory is fine for it.

What changes are you making to the A7N8X BIOS when it hangs? Does it happen no matter what you change? That board uses the BIOS flash chip to save some of the settings that are normally only stored in CMOS RAM. Settings for the processor and memory speeds are one thing that does that, so when you save changes to those, the system freezes for a moment before rebooting, because it has to write to the flash memory rather than just CMOS RAM. Other things like the basic clock/IDE port setup shouldn't do that. Are you trying to set up the CPU bus to higher than default speeds when it shows the random characters on screen?

The CPU would be auto-detected as an 1800+ by default, if the BIOS setup has lost the configuration specifying to use a 133MHz bus speed (a 15X multiplier on a 100MHz bus results in about the 1.53GHz speed of an 1800+). Make sure that your board has the CPU_FSB jumper set to pins 1/2, which it probably does since you're able to use the 133MHz bus speed manually.

If the system never will remember the proper bus speed when you actually turn it off (as opposed to a soft-reset) then there may be a problem with the flash settings or BIOS chip.

Thanks, that all seem to tie in with what i have been doing, thanks. I have stopped fiddling about now and it all seems to have calmed down.

Do you have an A7N8X? If so do you also have these problems and possibly know a cure:

Extremely long boot up time compared to previous motherboard (K7S5a), tried reinstalling Win 98 to no avail.

When restarting from win 98, sometimes, windows seems to shut down and the screen goes blank, then nothing happens monitor goes to sleep fans still running but nothing will revive it (keystrkokes/mouse).

Thanks for your help Lord Evermore

If you have an active LAN card that isn't connected to anything, go into DevMgr and into Properties of the LAN Card and check "disable in this hardware profile". Slow boot = GONE!
My MSI won't wake from its slumber either. Go into Control Panel -> Power Management. Set it to Always On, NEVER, NEVER. then go into your BIOS setup and make sure there's nothing set in there that might make it go to sleep or standby mode.
