Which TV? Narrowed down the choices to these two

as far as i know sony uses samsung panels in some of their models, so if these are the same panels I would go for that which is cheaper

but overall id say the samsung is ftw

The Samsung hands down. I have various Samsung products, like 2 22" LCD monitors and a 46" 650 series LCD, which rocks.

I won't bother to knock Sony much, but I don't care for their poor quality control because I had a lot of Sony products that broke for various electronic reasons and frequently involving design flaws. Like a Sony camcorder handle breaking the plastic housing at the strap mount that I hardly ever even used.

If you are going to spend $1500 on a LCD why not just spend $300 more and get a Samsung 46" 650 series? You are getting a LOT more features like 120hz 50,000:1 dynamic contrast and internet connectivity for that $300 more. I think it's money well spent at this price point.

I third the Samsung. Spring for the 52". It's well worth the couple hundred more and bigger is always better. You won't regret it.

The A550 series LCDs are simply the best bang for the buck out there right now.

To be honest, i'm not a huge fan of the bezel in the lower/middle end Sony's. I thought last years design was better. Their higher end models with the thinner bezel are nicer IMO.

Amazon has some good prices for the Samsungs;

LN46A550 for around $1449
LN52A550 for around $1709
LN46A650 for around $1749

Those are on my short list right now.

24 months no interest on an Amazon Store Card.
Free Shipping.
No Tax to most states.
Decently cheap extended warranties directly from Samsung (In-Home Service)

Sounds like a good deal to me.

Sony and Samsung both use the same panels in their TV's.

The Sony V4100 series compares well to the 550 but I give the edge to the 550. Also the S really compares to the 530, but I give the edge to the Samsung again. Personally, I think Sony really didn't improve on their panels a ton this year and even removed some features from the W series to make the Z-series more attractive. Samsung on the other hand went all out in upgrading their whole lineup and it turned out great IMO. Besides even if you find both models in a given feature range to look identical the Sony is pretty much always 2-300 more.

I think if you can find the Samsung 530 out there somewhere, its an even bigger bargain. They advertise it as only having a 20,000:1 contrast ratio vs 30000:1 on the 550, but people on avsforum seem pretty convinced they actually have the exact same panel. The only difference is the bezel is different, and the 530's USB port is used only for firmware updates, while the 550 can display photos from a USB drive.

The A550 is a far better deal than the A650. And with the A650 you better have a completely dark room, otherwise you'll end up watching a reflection of yourself.

Thanks guys. I was able to score the 46A550 locally for $1350 delivered so I went with it!! Its going in the bedroom so i didnt spring for the A650. It was $400 more, and $1500 is my limit.

Congrats!

These settings worked great for me when I set up both A550s:

(This with the mode at "movie," "standard" and "dynamic" are useless)
Backlight = 4 (for dark room. Set to 6 or 7 when the room is bright.
Contrast = 95
Brightness = 46
Sharpness = 0
Color = 46
Tint = G50/R50

DETAILED SETTINGS

Black Adjust = Off
Dynamic Contrast = Off
Gamma = 0

Color Space = Custom
Red: R47 - G0 - B0
Green: R19 - G50 - B0
Blue: R10 - G0 - B100
Yellow: R50 - G50 - B0
Cyan: R20 - G46 - B46
Magenta: R35 - G0 - B47

Flesh Tone = 0
Edge Enhancement = Off
Xycc = Off

WHITE BALANCE (Most important color settings)

R-Offset = 26
G-Offset = 24
B-Offset = 23
R-Gain = 33
G-Gain = 24
B-Gain = 23

PICTURE OPTIONS

Color Tone = Warm 2 (Or Warm 1 depending on the saturation of the channel you're watching. Always Warm 2 for Blu-Ray)
Digital N/R = Off
HDMI Black Level = Normal (Usually blanked out anyhow)
Film Mode = off
Blue Mode = Off

Energy Saving = Off
Entertainment modes = Off

Also, if you will be using the built in speakers you NEED to use these settings. Otherwise it sounds like you're hearing it through a tube. The sound out of the box is atrocious. These setting make it sound normal:

(# of clicks):
Balance: 0
100Hz: 8 clicks right
300Hz: 8 left
1kHz: 4 left
3kHz: 3 right
10kHz: 5 right

From a mom-n-pop shop that I do computer work for. He sells me the TV's at his cost plus about 3% to cover credit card fees.

PM me if you want one I will hook ya up. They sell all appliances, not just TV's. I have bought over $50,000 worth of stuff from them over the last three years for friends and family.

And they are authorized dealers, not like 6th Ave
